Bonfire smell in/on schoolbag

I wonder if anyone can help me, please. About two months ago my DS went out with his friends and they made a bonfire. He took his very nice Bench schoolbag with him (why - I don't know!) and this now absolutely reeks of bonfire smoke.

I have tried washing it - first time anything that was washed with it also stank of smoke and I had to rewash all the other things.

Hung it outside in the garden for two weeks.

Washed again and hung in the garden for two weeks.

Filled with newspaper and left in the garden.

Has anyone any other ideas, please. It still smells too much to use as the smell is unbearable if you wear the bag at all for more than about one minute.

Many thanks.

Have you tried cleaning with white vinegar? It is a brill neutraliser. Use hot with a micro cloth.
