We have a bungalow where the front door opens on to a hall way with all the bedroom doors off the hall.
I've replaced the bedroom carpets twice since moving here 3 years ago.
The dirt is driving me mental, we have no porch so i can't get them to take their shoes off outside.
The other problem is that the patio doors open out on to the garden from the living so literally if it's not one end of the house it's the other.
I have laminate in the hall, the kitchen has lino, then the living room leading through from the kitchen has laminate.
Can anyone think of a solution to the dirt being constantly walked through the house ?

no we have the same thing

i got 3 doormats from watsons which ar ereally good at trapping dirt and do take a bit of it off. children are reminded every time we come in to take shoes straight off which they are supposed to do in the hallway and put shoes on the rack. doesn't always work, but 7/10 times!

also have a runner in the hall as well just to take up any mud/dirt/wet that hasn't been wiped off on the mat

You need to be German about it. Shoe rack in the hall (and by the patio door if necessary) and EVERYONE takes their shoes off on the doormat when they come in. We lived in Berlin for many years and this was common practice to the extent that many visitors would bring a pair of slippers when visiting!
