Curtains - Laura Ashley

Hi,

We need to get some made to measure curtains for a few rooms in our new house.

I like some of the fabrics in Laura Ashley but even in the sale the quotes are coming back high.

For example for window 380cm x 217cm the quote was around £450.

What should I expect to pay per metre for nice ready made curtains?
Laura Ashley have ranges from around £22 to £40 per metre. Is this expensive?

Thanks!

Well, LA furnishing cotton should be about £8 a metre and lining material another £4 a metre, so £12 a metre.

Expect to pay the equivalent amount for labour and then add VAT.

Your example would be 16m of materials = £192 + the same amount in labour £192 + VAT £61.20 = 445.20

So that sounds about right for lined cotton curtains.

Hi Abubu. I've just bought curtain material from Laura Ashley's sale but I have gone with a local lady for getting them made up. They quoted me nearly £600 and she wants £150! I would see what independant local business' quote before you decide.

Having curtains made-to-measure does work out to be quite expensive, so the prices you mention look about right.

Just a thought but you might find some more reasonably priced "ready-made" curtains at a Curtain Echange. Even if they need altering slightly it may work out cheaper?

I did the same as Twinky when I last had curtains. LA fabric in the sale or Ebay then someone made them up for me. She charged something like £45 forca Roman blind including linings and fixing, then £12 per width for the curtains.

I generally make my own now as it isn't that difficult if you have a machine and can sew so definitely ask around. Another good place to look is Dunelm Mill if you have one local to you, actually I think you can order online now.

abubu
i got a sample from LA and found almost identical material in Debenhams, waited until they had their sale so got extra 20% off. Think they worked out to be half the price LA quoted.

Always get mine made up - charge around £120. Laura Ashley can be a bloody nightmare if there is a mistake! Can take ages to rectify.
