How do you store coats, hats, shoes etc?

We have quite a big hall but no hall cupboard or cloakroom. We've put rows of hooks on the wall and have some open plastic boxes for shoe storage but it always looks messy. In our last house we had an ikea shoe cupboard, with drawers which lean open, but the storage space wasn't really very big compared to the size of the cupboard. And I really want somewhere to put coats, hats, gloves etc, and be able to shut it away.

I looked for freestanding coat cupboards but couldn't see any. Wondered about a wardrobe but I think it will look a bit, well, wardrobe-y as people come in the house.

What coat, etc storage do you have? Any cunning ideas I've missed? Do I just have to accept that 5 people's outdoor stuff is a bit messy?

A friend of mine had wardrobes along one wall from Ikea. She had a slate floor with the burgundy/red coloured ikea wardrobe doors. Looked fantastic.

I want one of those shelves with hooks on and wicker baskets above for hats and gloves etc. You can get matching benches for underneath with cubby holes for shoes but we don't have room for one DH keeps saying he will make a shelf

Console table, with shoe racks underneath. Somehow looks less messy than if you are looking straight at the shoe racks IYSWIM. Keep gloves, woolly hats etc. in the console table drawers. Then a row of coat hooks, including cute low down coat hooks if you have toddlers. The best tip is actually to keep out-of-season stuff out of the hall TBH.

I'm just decorating our hall atm and am looking for something for hats and gloves. Have a cupboard for coats and shoes are going in a trunk, but need something nice for little things.

I use 3 large wall mounted hooks to hold the kids coats, something heavy duty and pratical, like some kind
of folding or hide away hooks would work.

or maybe some kind
folding rotating hook

I think hooks are best as they keeps clear from foot level.

We've got a row of hooks for coats, I hang a bag up to keep hats, gloves etc together and there's a shoe rack underneath.

I do struggle with

  • putting away out of season stuff, I don't really need my flip flops at the moment.
  • Getting everyone to put their shoes on the rack instead of in front of it.

I have a unit with 3 little baskets in it for stuff and hooks under it for coats, school bags etc

Doesnt solve shoes tho.

I would love a shoe rack which hides the shoes- a cupboard or drop down drawers or similar but all the ones i have seen only seem to hold shoes up to a size 9. DH is blessed Hmm with size 12 feet and his shoes include very large work boots.

Any ideas?

I managed to find an Edwardian coat rack with shelf and room to suspend shoe hangers under, but have previously used bookshelves unit for shoes, gloves etc. near/under hooks for coats.
