AIBU to think nearly 4 hours of homework a night is too much for a year 10 student

So last night DD was working on her homework from 4:00 to nearly 9:00 (she had a break for dinner of course I made her). AIBU to think this is too much time to be spending on homework. The school told us at the start of the year she'll be getting 2-3 hours with 3 hours being a heavy night when in reality she's had a few times this year when it's been closer to 4. She's a smart student so it's not her struggling it's the amount she's set. I've seen the homework myself and I'm shocked at the quantity. Also it's not exactly major subjects like maths that are adding major bits to the pile. Maths and English are somewhat reasonable. It's subjects like RS and IT both are mandatory in her school which are setting massive massive chunks. She is also getting a lot in science and apparently the teacher doesn't actually teach them the stuff (the missing notes and texts from her usually top scoring friends about frustration help me to believe this).
Is there anything I can do about this I don't want her working 4 hours a day every week day. She needs some downtime as well as time to have a social life outside of school.

I'm a teacher at secondary. I'd say that's definitely too much.
I think what you need to find out is how long staff are expecting her tasks to take and how often they are seeing tasks.
If you raise this as a question and a concern for your DD, pastoral staff in particular might just be able to look into it and see what they can do.

Yes.

It’s definitely worth raising this as a carefully written query with the school. The pastoral staff may be interested in handling the problem and see what they can realistically do. Get in contact with the teacher by email.

Find out how much time is she expected to spend doing homework. Also ask how you are supposed to help her. If they fail to take action then you should consider switching schools, homeschooling or contacting OFSTED.

Are you sure they are not doubles? My son used to be set doubles (ie to cover 2 sessions of homework rather than 1) but decided to do it all at once so he didn't forget where he was etc. They end up putting pressure on themselves. Doubles were quite usual in essay or research type subjects.

My son is Yr11 in a very academic independent school and has never had that much homework. As a guide his school say for Yr9/10 they are set 2-3 subject homework’s per night and each one should take max 45 minutes
