Son year 7 struggling to get into homework routine

I’ll say straight away I’m probably getting over involved here. DS2 started at grammar school a week ago, after barely doing any homework in his last year at primary. The classes are of course noticeably more challenging than in primary school. As background, DS got in to the school via the waiting list ( and I have a bit of impostor syndrome by proxy).
Today he had three pieces of homework to do and (the school was closed all day ). He did some work but kept retreating onto his mobile phone and disappointingly has only completed 1piece of work, and is leaving another for tomorrow ( when he’ll be tired after school) and one for the weekend ( when other activities will be happening).
I have felt frustrated and wanted to take his phone away but didn’t as I don’t want to start The whole homework thing off on a bad footing and turn it into a struggle.
What is the best way forward? He needs to get into a good routine, get his homework in as required and not depend on me to remind him/ nag.
Any advice gratefully received!

I have yr11 and yr7 boys.

I'm really struggling with the homework as my yr11 boy hasn't done any till now (long back story - SEN so did it at school. Now not an option).

Yr7 boy is completely dippy and procrastinates constantly. I have printed out blank calender months and am writing on there what homework needs to be completed each night.

I have a permanent headache

Hi fishes. Year 7 boy is getting into a bit of a routine. The school uses the “ show my homework” app which is useful as we have a login and can check. He does need reminders and we have to bargain with him using screen time as leverage: you do maths homework then you can have an hour on your phone, etc. I think it gets easier. For your year 11 boy it is new territory though. Is the school being helpful?

We have Show my homework too.

Haven't had any contact with school.

Calling him now to do some more work!

We do 20 minutes of homework each day. So far it’s simple things like reading books spelling writing skills etc. We have a schedule for homework.
After a quick snack break I insist on starting homework before bedtime. It does not take long to complete. They are then free to have free time for a while until I call them asking them to read to me or daddy. It’s worth contacting the school for advice. Try talking with his teacher.
They should be able to help offer advice on what to do next.

yeah, in school was difficult. I spent about 6 hours at school, and after being so tired, I had to sit at home for another 9 hours! It's terrible, because I didn't have time to sit at home, go for a walk, read a book, or watch TV
