Anyone know of Card games to encourage reading for my 5 year old please?

Hi, my son has just finished reception but is finding reading a real challenge. He is heavily into cars top trumps - his number recognition has come on leaps and bounds from playing it. I wondered if anyone could recommend a game with similar structure since he loves it so much but encourages reading skills.

Many thanks

This is an old thread but if the question is still relevant, why not make your own cards? First thought is, use an old pack of cards, write 13 important words on big stickers four times over, stick them on and play snap. He'll start to look for the shape and letter clues in the words (if you want to make it easier write four of the words in red, four in green, five in black). When he's got (almost) as fast as you at recognising them, write the words up on his wall and go on to the next 13. (Ladybird Key Words is a good clue to what words to use first.)

another great card game is Boggle Slam. It is a speed game, but you could eliminate the speed. it's all about making 4 letter words !

Scrabble Dash is good, but Boggle Slam seems to be the preferred in our house.

If the OP is still reading ... it might be worth you signing up for the Activities section of the Teachers Pet website (£12 for a year). They have lots and lots of games that you download to print out.

I'd second the suggestion for Boggle Slam, and all the other Boggle games too.
