home edding in Oz?

Just wondering if any of you are, or know of, any home edders in Australia?

Longwinded explanation follows
Lots is going on in our life at the moment, including ds2's school starting the statementing process for him, and dp and I keep wondering if home-ed would be better for him. I'm working until June so probably wouldn't be able to do it until next term anyway, so that gives us a bit longer to think about it. (I almost home-edded ds1 so I've given it a lot of serious thought before anyway.)

But the big other thing is that we might end up moving to Australia. I would definitely like to know more about the school system there, especially regards special needs. So I've put a request in the Living Overseas topic. But it would also be good to get in contact with home edders before we move, whether or not we have already gone down that route.

thanks in advance for any info!

Hi there; not that clued up but didn't want to leave your post unanswered!

Am relatively new to HE myself, but am doing it with 3 and one on the way. It's all new and rollercoastery, but great once you relax into it!

Wanted to say that if your DS does get statemented, you will then need to actually get the LEA's permission to take him out of school. My daughter also was close on this route, and I now thank Cod that she was never statemented!

Re; Oz. I have many rellies over in W.A. When I informed MIL about us de regging kids, she told me how much HE goes on in Oz; which seems to be a lot! The School Of/In The Air, I think is about tons of kids living all over Oz remotely, and they have lessons on CB radio! Seems not out of the ordinary. I'm not sure what the approaches are when distance to school isn't an issue, but there are tons of forums regarding emigration.
I will see if I can find out more. I would like to think HE wouldn't be a problem, but my experiences in Oz have sometimes been surprisingly redneck..

it depends on which state you move to - I sort-of looked into it as we were possibly moving there for a bit. We'd have been in/near Sydney and the requirements there were a year's worth of plans, registered with the authorities, but I think some other states are less onerous. No idea about SNs though.
Try googling home education + state (or possibly home schooling + state) and you should get info.

Thanks ever so much for all that about Australia. I could probably produce a year's worth of plans if necessary... and pretend we were sticking to it somehow.

Thanks for the info about statementing too. I did worry about that. Hopefully we will decide whether or not to HE him before the statementing process is completed.
