We're just starting out with home ed- I've looked through the list of books on here (thanks Julie!) and through the list on Amazon- but it's all a bit bewildering

[dazed and confused emoticon]

has anyone found any book particularly helpful- particularly early on in their HE life??

thanks

I would really recommend "free range education" edited by Terri Dowty - its the experince of 20 very different families and I find it a very reassurring read and also has a great section on home ed and the law too.

Also, How children learn by John Holt on how children learn without us realising it!

Good luck...I have been HE my eldest now for 4 weeks and we are loving it x

LauraIngallsWilder · 28/01/2010 20:17

I second the reccomendation for Free range education - I found that really helpful

How children learn by John Holt is interesting but not one I want to keep - thus if you want to buy my copy off me.............. Im all ears!

I havent bought any others, YET

flipper09 · 28/01/2010 20:30

The Alan Thomas book is great. How Children Learn. If you are a member of EO I think you can get a discount.

Missouri · 28/01/2010 22:04

General HE:
Learning All the Time by John Holt, ISBN-10: 0-201-55091-1, ISBN-13:978-0-201-55091-7

Reading:
Toe by Toe by Keda Cowling & Harry Cowling, ISBN: 0-9522564-0-1

We found this to be an excellent book for helping our son with reading.

FlamingoBingo · 29/01/2010 14:08

Free Range Education; anything by John Holt and how Children learn At HOme by Alan Thomas and Harriet Pattison.

FlamingoBingo · 29/01/2010 14:08

Oh, and Read With Me: An Apprenticeship approach to reading by Liz Waterland.

becaroo · 29/01/2010 17:52

Oh yes, would really agree and recommend both;

Toe by Toe by Keda Cowling & Harry Cowling, ISBN: 0-9522564-0-1
We use this with ds1.

and;
Read With Me: An Apprenticeship approach to reading by Liz Waterland
as receommended to me by flamingo!

CitizenPrecious · 29/01/2010 22:05

thanks for all of these recommendations- sorry I've not been on earlier

I have now got a list- hooray!

...then it'll be just a matter of finding the time to actually read the buggers

I've read Homeschooling for Dummies.

SDeuchars · 15/05/2010 18:55

It must be easier to homeschool dummies. At least they stay where you put them and don't answer back.

becaroo · 16/05/2010 11:22

Any good marjoriew ????

Have just started using "yes we can read" with ds1. Hoping it will help him. He is only 7 though..does that matter do you think??

SDeuchars

Marjoriew · 16/05/2010 13:24

No, it's crap actually - someone gave it to me as a pressie

Grandson struggles with reading too - he's nearly 11.

But he's becoming more interested - titles like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Beast Quest, and The Dirty Bertie series.
