Transition from primary to homeschooling!

Hi everyone!

I'm new here. My DS is in Year 6 and finishing primary school this summer.

Instead of moving on to a secondary school, we've decided to try a homeschooling programme, which he's really excited about!

From what I understand, when a child transitions to secondary school or going to a new school, their records and files are typically forwarded to the new school.

In our case, since we're opting for homeschooling, I'm wondering, Can we request those records ourselves?

If anyone has gone through a similar situation, could you let me know what the process was like, or point me toward the relevant laws or guidelines please?

Thank you so much in advance! 🙂

No experience of this but surely you could just ask and if they aren’t helpful do a SAR under the Data protection Act

@olderthanyouthink Thank you so much for your reply. I was thinking of asking for Subject Access Request at the same time wasn't sure what the guideline is or if we are to follow any specific guideline when going to online schooling / home schooling. Thank you :)

Yes you have a legal right to see the records - here’s a template letter you can use to request them. I believe schools have 15 working days to process the request - but I’m not sure if that’s term time days or normal working days tbh!

The model letter linked to in a previous post only applies if the school is maintained or a NMSS.

However, you can make a subject access request whatever the school type.

Thank you 😊

I would probably ask the school first without going through the SAR route, they might be happy to give you the information.
