Sorry to rush in with a quick question like this.
I've got 15 mins before I go collect ds from school - Am I correct in thinking that if I want to pull him out of school and switch to home ed all I need to do is simply tell the school?

are you in england, sixlostmonkeys?
if you visit educationotherwise you will find all the info you need.

Yes you are right. Assuming your child is not in a special school, and you are in England or Wales, all you need to do is to inform the school.
However it is important that you do so properly, you need to write a letter to the head of the school and inform him that you ARE home educating.
There is a sample deregistration letter here;
www.home-education.org.uk/legal-dereg.htm
and here;
www.education-otherwise.org/Legal/Deregistration.htm

Both of these websites contain all the information you need-even if you are based in Northern Ireland or Scotland or if your child is in a special school and both sites are excellent sources of support.

I would ensure I got a receipt for the letter if I took it in by hand or I would send it by registered post if I mailed it.
You are under no obligation to tell the LA-that is the responsibility of the school.

Def. get a receipt

Slight hijack - sorry

I deregistered on March 30th and didn't get a receipt, just handed letter in at school office. I did ask in the letter to be sent confirmation that the LA had been informed but have not received this. Should I be worried? I have not contacted LA myself, would rather wait for them to contact me.

We took DD2 out last Easter, and still haven't heard anything from our LA - not that I'm complaining mind! It depends on the area I think, and how busy they are.
