Can I earn as a tutor and home educate?

We have decided to home educate DS who is Y7. I have mainly been a sahm throughout the primary years but was intending to go back to work as we have a far from lavish lifestyle. I am a trained primary school teacher but haven't had a contract for the last 13 years and haven't done any supply work for the last 5 years although I have worked in a pre school setting and at after school clubs within the last couple of years.

So I was wondering if there was much call for tutoring within home education that I can fit around my time with DS and would you pay me to do so given that I haven't formally taught for quite a while? I did do quite a lot of tutoring before I had children but again that was 13 years ago.

Sounds great. Do you have a home ed group where you are? You could check face book for one. You could set up a little business teaching your favourite subject like "book club", "get active", "science in the woods", or something and do a morning session each week for a group of home ed kids. In my area that would be very popular. Also many school educated families hire an 11 plus tutor/ sats tutor in the evenings so you could do that too. Good luck!

I use a tutor for DS primary school age. I found his tutor via a website that matched my requirements and location. They gave me a list and I spoke to them before going ahead with a trial.

Have a look on line and see if you can register with a local one to you.

Not sure if there is a cost as I pay my tutor directly.

Google Catherine Mooney, Echo Education (formerly Sam Martell) and Dreaming Spires. They are well thought of home ed tutoring/course offering parents. Have a look at what they offer, at what cost, to get an idea of what the market looks like at present.

Also take a gander at the yahoo HE Exams group (wiki here he-exams.wikia.com/wiki/HE_Exams_Wiki ) Tutors and anybody else offering services can advertise there on Thursdays.

Might take time to establish yourself, and depending on your subject there may be some competition, but it is certainly an option.

Thanks for your replies. It looks as though it should be possible which is great as the money will be going towards educating DS to GCSE level. I take my hat off to all of you who are home educating, it is a scary step to take!

I feel the tutoring industry has gone a little crazy – I see so many jobs for such young kids who really should be out playing in the park. It’s an industry that has grown up out of a lack of school places. Competition for schools and universities is high – many of the requests are for 11+ and entrance exam practice.
