Ideas for a 4yr old to learn about volcanoes.

We see Rangitoto Island most days travelling to friend/swimming lessons & the childminders which has sparked 4.3year olds interest in volcanoes.

A trip to the island is something we are saving up for as it's quite expensive but does anyone have any ideas for activities a 4yr old (and probably his 2.10 year old brother) will enjoy?

We're going to start with making a volcano and doing the baking soda/vinegar explosion.

Google 'volcano activities for children' and lots come up. Some great videos among other things.

I would watch some footage of eruptions, get a book (DK do one) to see how they are formed and then use this as a way in to other areas - seaside (most volcanoes are under the sea), space (biggest volcano in solar system is on Mars), history (Pompeii), geography (find volcanoes on a world map or Google Earth), geology (pumice).

As far as practical stuff goes I can only think of the bicarb/vinegar one you're already planning, but would maybe collect some pretty stones for the rock polisher.

Thank-you both.

Google throws up loads of weird and whacky things so thought I'd ask here to see what others had done. Tried and tested and all that.

adeucalione. I like how you're thinking in subjects. If there's one thing I've found, it's just how many subjects you can easily cover from one small topic. I love it.

I love HE. Wink
