New to home ed and working

I think I am about to start home educating my 9 year old ds after the holidays next week. Very scared but also excited! Unfortunately, I do work p/t. How do you all manage. I could cut my hours back a bit but we do need my money and I don't want to be stuck at home all the time with no money to do anything!

Also, any advice would be very welcome. My ds is dyslexic, hates/hated school with a passion, has mild adhd and sensory issues.

Just read a fantastic article how school doesn't help these 'learning difficulties' and that if they found the right way to teach them, then they wouldn't have these difficulties!!

You make it sound as if 'school' covers them all! Some are useless- some are fantastic and there is everything in between. My DS is dyslexic and his primary school couldn't have been better. We had a major blip when he started secondary school, but they then got their act together. Did he not have an IEP?
It sounds as if he was in a poor one if he hated it.
Good luck if you are going to HE- have you a DP who can do a share?

Hi Indiastar and congratulations on taking steps to improve life for your ds. We have found H.E to be liberating and don't worry, if you do cut back hours at work, there are so many things you can do cheaply or free.
I think my dd is dyslexic and dispraxic but her old school wouldn't provide any support as she was tested as slightly above average.

I'm not sure about the particular book you have read but I found one which was really inspiring.

H.E is fine if you work. I don't personally but there are plenty on here that do. They regularly point out that as H.ed doesn't have to follow set hours you can do things whenever you want to.
I think the most important thing is your ds happiness and I'm sure this will improve once he is out of his current situation.

We HEd our 3 DDs and I work part time and DH full time. It only works for us because DH works from home 3 days a week and those are the days I work (4 hours in the morning mondays and fridays and 3 hours thursday evening). I also work saturday mornings. DDs are 8 and 9 and are very good at occupying themselves at these times so DH can get on with his work. While he is available for any emergencies he doesn't actually so anything directly with them and they have learnt what I think is a really important skill of time management. I leave them a selection of things to do or they read.

I do really value my time at work, and we need the money, but if DH couldn't work from home I'm not sure what we'd do...

Could your DS come to work with you and sit and do something? Even if it wasn't anything 'educational' as such you could make up for this at other times. Or do you have someone who could look after him at these times? A local childminder? I was looking for a childminder at one point and put an advert on local netmums and got loads of replies.
