Cream or coloured walls with a Chesterfield for Victorian style living room?

I’m completely redoing my living room. Floor, ceiling, the lot. The whole room will be gutted and everything gone so blank canvas.

All I know is that I want a Victorian style drawing room effect. I’m thinking dark blue or dark green walls and a leather chesterfield couch.

my dilemma is … do I get a dark green/blue chesterfield and paint the walls cream or get a cream chesterfield and colour the walls?

what would you do?

We previously decorated in a very victorian style and had coloured sofas (green) with a saturated terracotta on the walls. The curtains were a heavy green velvet with orange/terracotta swagged pelmet (this was 20 years ago lol).

My preference is for lots of deep colours, so I wouldn't choose plain cream for any of it, but that's me. The only time we had cream in a living room was when we used a reproduction Voysey wallpaper with cream background and pattern in black, olive and gold. That was paired with an antique green velvet sofa and a mustard leather chesterfield.

Sounds divine!!

I think the walls would need to be deeply coloured for that Victorian look - not cream I don’t think.

i also think the sofa would need to be coloured though. So not cream. I’m also not sure leather was popular for sofas before the 20th century? But I could be wrong on that.

Ofc you are not making a museum room so you can have whatever colour you wish. But I think rich coloured walls and textiles would give you more of the effect you want.

Dark walls and sofa if you want a Victorian look. Would be gorgeous.
