Which living room design suits a neutral country Cotswolds style best?

Hi all

We are renovating our living room and my designer has come up with two similar designs for our living room and I can't decide between the two and wanted people's opinions as that may help me.

I was aiming for a country Cotswolds style with an elegant feel and in neutral colours.

I like both so much and can't decide between the two I like the first option with the eucalyptus tree because it feels cosy and warm but then I like the balance and elegance that option two brings with the matching sideboards which do you prefer out of these two?

I used ChatGPT in my spare room and it took the bedside cabinet that is currently there and put the top of it on the bed 🤣. It also didn't get rid of the soctopus I had hanging on the curtain rail.

Even better- the bedside table has been absorbed into the bed like it's quicksand😂

I think AI can be handy as a starting point for ID and sometimes it can do a pretty good job if you're just trying to get a rough visual on something - I got it to take a set of stairs out and it did that really well (accurately predicted what would be behind them and filled it in) but then it couldn't turn a toilet round by 90 degrees and there's another thread on here where the shower curtain is in the middle of the bath and it's lost the taps.

Update , I took on board what another poster said about the flowers on the coffee table which I agree with them on and I removed them however chatGPT could turn the chair around like I wanted and it's added candles when I specifically asked for a tissue box , remote and coasters but I still think it looks better now.

I also want to state that the image of my boys above the fireplace chatGPT changed as well as it's actually a painting of them so it is art it's not just a blown up photo of them I had a painting done of them but AI has completely changed it.

Hi MerryRobin,

AI can be a great inspiration for redesign (I use it myself for garden redesign) but it was dishonest of your designer to act like it was their own work.

They used Gemini (Google), not ChatGPT. You can tell by the watermark in the bottom right corner.

I read about your preference for muted colours, and I still like the designs - I'd add some whites rather than colour, so it won't all come out 'muddy'.

Anyway, if you want to play around with this yourself, I recommend Gemini - it's pretty good at these things.

Thanks I tried a few times with chatGPT and it could never do a tissue box. I'll try Gemini then.

I wouldn't have minded if she told me it was AI but she did say these are her designs which is why I felt annoyed.

I like the final design I made more I think it makes more sense to have a tree in that left alcove as it's more easy at Christmas then just swap one tree for another and not having to move a heavy sideboard.

We did mess around this morning much to my husbands annoyance we moved a chest of drawers from the dinning room the living room as it's the same width and depth as the sideboard I found just it's way taller than the sideboard and we moved the TV stand out the way and placed our TV on the chest of drawers just to see what we think of it being straight in the alcove and we like it but I'm so glad I listened to everyone here and changed my mind back to having the TV on the sideboard because the only thing we hated when it was on the chest of drawers was that because it was so tall the TV was high nearly to the same level as the painting of our boys on the chimney breast and we did end up with our necks bent looking up so it definitely would have caused uncomfortable viewing if it was on the wall the sideboard is a good height for comfortable viewing.

Love that you have a painting of your boys to take pride of place @MerryRobin ❤️ We lost our two in 2023 and 2024 and whilst we have lots of digital photos of them, the only other reminder is a little antique print of a pair of Georgian girls that I always referred to by our dogs' names (who were actually a boy and a girl lol). It's in our bedroom and I often speak to it, sad creature that I am!

Second one is better
No keen on the tv over the fire .

The images are so similar that the differences immaterial, but I really dislike TV screens on chimney breasts above the mantle piece. I’d put a lovely painting there and keep your TV somewhere less conspicuous.

Final plan for the living room I'm getting a fuller eucalyptus tree and placing it in a limestone planter to match my style and keeping the TV on the sideboard
