Messed up on sofa order

Totally messed up on made to measure sofas and can’t take them back! Just had an extension done and plan was to have a corner sofa and dining table.

For some reason, DH suggested last minute to get 2 separate ones and we didn’t account for the depth of them so now they have arrived, the arm of one essentially overlaps with the seat of the one on the other wall!

im absolutely gutted, i wanted a modern look, instead it looks overcrowded and has made the space feel really small.

Aside from replace them as we can’t afford that, does anyone have any tips on how to make it look less awful.

Can you just take a photo op?!

OneGreenSheep · 16/04/2026 18:10

Try where the dining table is, that looks like the best fit.

Or try one with its back to the dining table, although maybe not the most functional if you use it every day.

If you have another room with sofas, could you swap some around?

MakeMineStrong · 16/04/2026 18:11

Find a joiner who might be able to work removing the sofa arm.

EmilyintheUK · 16/04/2026 18:11

Can you use one in another room and maybe get a chair or something else to fit in this room with the other one?

Move table to where sofa is by door

Move sofas out to the left so they face each other

Difficult without dimensions of space / furniture.

…pic loading…

Definitely this if they fit. Better to have table nearer the kitchen.

EsacalateThis · 16/04/2026 18:14

Not sure about space - but butt them both up to a square, coffee table height table which sits in the corner of the room. That would form a corner unit.

BillieWiper · 16/04/2026 18:18

Sofas on the opposite walls where the dining table was and put DT where sofas were/currently are?

Franpie · 16/04/2026 18:20

Might you be able to throw more money at it to make it work? Maybe the maker can turn the 2 sofas you already have into a corner sofa for not much more money?

Or you could always contact someone like this company that dismantles furniture and puts it back together to see if they could help?

You’re not cross with dh are you? Unless you disagreed with the change and he overruled you

I’m cross at myself as I knew I wanted a corner sofa but we went to a few shops and didn’t see any we liked & DH was getting annoyed I was taking too long to find one. I should have stuck to my guns

Trying to do one now -

Can you turn the dining table 90 degrees so you can move the sofa further that way? Then have the two sofa arms touching but with an empty square in between them (you could put a tall plant in that space, a tall table, that sort of thing, so people sitting at those ens have somewhere to put their drinks, books etc).

Presumably she was already planning an empty square in the corner to be filled with something. Must not be enough room to have the arms only touching at the tips.

Powderedalkali · 16/04/2026 18:44

Would the style work if you had one or two of the arms removed? Lots of the sofas are modular or can have arms removed for transport etc.

AltitudeCheck · 16/04/2026 18:49

Are these your main lounge area sofas or will you onlybuse them occasionally? Would they fit in the nook where the dining table is? Or one there and the other on the other wall?

Could you manage with just one and sell the other? Perhaps get a cool chair in a different colour/ style if you need more seating?

Summersongroses · 16/04/2026 18:52

Could you put the sofas facing each other with a small coffee table in the middle? Art not my strong point but like this…. If not. Maybe just try to sell them on… we all make mistakes. Don’t beat yourself up x

Can you keep one and get a second cheaper smaller sofa? Mix and match can look really good!

Sofamessup · 16/04/2026 18:57

Thank you for all the advice ladies. We’ve just done a little rejuvenating & put 1 sofa with its back to the kitchen to create a sealed off seating area and it just about works !!

So relieved, I was spiralling a lot lol in case you couldn’t tell !

HalzTangz · 16/04/2026 19:00

Could you not sell the sofas then buy a corner sofa?

thatsthatsaidthemayor · 16/04/2026 19:04

Can the second sofa back onto the dining table?

JustForGoss · 16/04/2026 19:06

Glad you are happier! We have similar layout to you and have two layouts we use: as you describe and then facing each other. We have narrow siding table in the kitchen: I was going to suggest exploring replacement table options (might be cheaper than new sofas!)

Mintyt · 16/04/2026 19:32

I know it’s not the point. But when you fill an empty space it does look to big, but I really really like oversized sofas.

LoftyPlumLion · 16/04/2026 19:45

Can’t you sell them as new? You’ll take a hit if a loss but not much I’d imagine

I had a custom made sofa last year and the store owner explained several changes they could make for a few hundred if we ever moved and the size didn’t work. So if the rearrangement you have made doesn’t solve it it’s definitely worth asking what they would charge to modify.
