What to put above this fireplace?

I need to put something, a mirror or a picture - Above this fireplace. I’m worried about it looking too square and boxy if I put a square or rectangle above it.

But if I put something circular above it, I’m worried it will look like the Play School windows 😁.

What shape do you think would work best?
also, I think the larger the better rather than something too small

Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome! Photo is uploaded but it may take some time to come through

This isn’t the photo I saw that made me love them, but gives a general idea.

That looks lovely actually!

There are so many great ideas/options that @AnneofBohemia should be spoilt for choice 😊

@AnneofBohemia as a purely personal preference, I think the fire would look better with a surround first and then balance with either a mirror or painting.

I love the Ikea mirror!

I love the Ikea mirror!

I think this may have been meant for @BaronessBomburst 😉

i love a chunky natural driftwoody looking shelf cut to the right size showing multiple shades of wood and character, varnished appropriately. beautiful.

Agree with this. The fireplace looks very small so anything above it would need to be smaller or it would become the focal point. Fine if that's what you want. I would do a large single canvas in that case.

Otherwise I would screw three pieces of wood together to make pillars and shelf. Bigger then the fire place to make it more of a feature. We have done similar with oak planks, top piece wider then pillars. Then rectangular art or mirror above. A large circle mirror or art would work too but choose a chunky frame.

I’ve been playing on Chat gpt for a fireplace surround for my house. I’d visited a few showrooms and sort of knew what I wanted but to photograph my room and upload it and ask for ideas to visualise it was brilliant. Even gave me a few ideas if we decided to redecorate.

We have one fireplace like that and it has a large round clock above it, which suits the room which has a dining table in front of it and built in cabinets in either side of the fireplace. Keeping the fireplace and clock fairly simple, creates a bit of space as the built-ins have stuff on them, so wouldn't want anything too busy.

We have pictures above two other fireplaces which are far more decorative.

Just redecorating the living room with a fireplace and was going to have a round mirror, but then read that you have to bear in mind that it will reflect back what is opposite it. In our case it is opposite a window with a very ugly view of cables, so gone off that idea.

How big is the white space? It looks perfect for one striking painting - a Rothko if there were a good enough quality print available 😀
