What is a nice yellow for a bedroom for a 17 year old girl?

I have had a few traumatic colour choices in my life so now tend to veer towards uniform light grey like a decor coward (while the decades try to purge the memory of a vomitous lilac I once chose thinking it was grey).

My dd loves yellow but I don’t know how you choose a good classy yellow.

I have a farrow & ball sample sheet (too expensive but they do have gorgeous colours) as a way to understand what people with good taste like (!).

So whats you’re fave yellow for a bedroom?

Many thanks!

You can get B&Q to dupe Farrow and Ball. It’s cheaper.

Which way does the room face?

BIWI · 08/01/2026 15:30

The one your 17 year old daughter likes/chooses, surely?

CurlewKate · 08/01/2026 15:32

Shouldn’t it be her choice?

You can’t get a colour match. They don’t truly exist. Pigments are what is used in expensive paint, the vinyl and chemical crap they put in cheapo paint doesn’t even vaguely replicate Farrow & Ball, it’s just in the region of that colour. You’re better off using a cheaper paint chart and finding a colour you like to get a true sample.

It is her choice, she wants yellow! She will be happy if we choose it.

Yes but does she want a tasteful pale yellow or full-on banana?

India yellow (farrow & ball) is gorgeous as it’s really warm. I’ve had that colour matched and loved it.

My kitchen is "Limitless" (Johnstone's) which is a lovely shade.

I’m not sure yet Enchanted! She said she’d look at some ideas!

I'm a fan of Dulux Banana Split, which is a lovely bright, warm yellow.

Farrow & Ball Dorset Cream gets my vote every time!

Little Greene is better than F&B (although similarly expensive). Giallo or Carys are beautiful yellows.

Have a look at Valspar or Benjamin Moore for sheer range of colours.

Colour matching is ok, the paint won’t behave exactly like F&B/LG, due to the composition of the paint, but I don’t think your 17yo will notice those subtleties. We colour matched L&G in Tikkurila paint for our hallway as it was more practical for high traffic areas and less prone to marking and it’s fine.
