What have you done with adult kids’ bedrooms once they leave home

I was wondering what people had done when the kids finally fly the nest.

All 3 of ours have no plans at the moment to come back and are settling into their own places with partners.

2 of them don’t live locally so need to stay over when they visit.

At the moment they all look slightly abandoned with some of their stuff still here. I’m thinking 2 guest rooms and maybe some exercise equipment in the other.

One dd comes back quite often so she will probably want to think that one room is still ‘hers’ which I don’t mind aslong as it’s tidy.

I’m starting to dump stuff in them which isn’t a good use of space.

Dm turned ours into guest rooms.

mamagogo1 · 03/09/2025 16:27

Ours are guest rooms though both still have some stuff in them

One is a WFH office and combination craft room . One is a guest bedroom . We made a deal that they could leave a certain amount of things at ours , but 5 years down the line it’s probably time they came and gave it a once over to get rid of a bit more . In the main the guest room is tidy and ready to be used at any time , but I have developed a habit of using it to store Christmas presents in now I no longer have to hide them away !

Office/guest room, craft room/guest room and dedicated guest room. All with stuff carefully boxed and shelved in corners and under beds and in wardrobes.

They keep on to-ing and fro-ing so I redecorated them in a grown up way, suitable for guests, but they are still very much their own room.

One guest room, the other two are our offices now we WFH

Husband made the unilateral decision to convert my stepdaughter’s bedroom into a weights/music room. Did not consult me.

My parents instead of sharing a bedroom now have a room each (both snore but my dad is REALLY loud). 3rd bedroom is now the ironing room now plus books and has a little desk although the desk doesn't get used really as my dad has a laptop and prefers the kitchen table.

AnneButNotHathaway · 04/09/2025 10:08

One is an office for days we WFH (usually it doesn't overlap) and the second one is a guest bedroom, but we didn't change a lot in there.
You can start with a room planner, upload a blueprint in there if you have one and see what you can do with the space.

Thanks for the replies. Time to tackle the empty nest I think and use all this space better.

Ours are guest rooms now, really nicely decorated and with a KS bed in each - I feel slightly guilty that they are so much nicer than when the kids were at home, but we didn't have the money, time or energy when they were here.

TheStroppyFeminist · 04/09/2025 17:25

😂

We've left ours as they left them but watching with interest as we ought to do something with them.

My parents took a bag of stuff from my old room to my new home every time they visited

DonewhatIcando · 04/09/2025 18:34

One guest room and one is my dressing room, which I love, nice wardrobes, handbags on display etc

FeatheryFlorence · 04/09/2025 21:07

One guest room and the other is the library.

GnomeDePlume · 04/09/2025 21:18

We joined one room to our bedroom to make a super large dressing room.

The other room is my sewing room. When a DC comes to stay it is converted back to a bedroom (fold down bed)

thelovelyview · 05/09/2025 08:21

Would you consider moving house? We probably will.

Rocknrollstar · 05/09/2025 08:40

One guest room and a study (for me).

Yes but not for another 5 years or so. I guess when we do put it on the market those rooms will need to look like bedrooms.
