Painting our bedroom but baby (4 months) sleeps in with us

Hi all,

I’m planning on painting our bedroom as we’re getting a new bed in a new colour, just so it matches better. Our walls are currently light grey and our new bed will be cream.

We’ve got a 4 month old who sleeps in our room in a next to me and a nearly 2 year old whose room is across the hall. It literally just dawned on me that I shouldn’t paint due to fumes the kids might be exposed to. Any advice on timeframes before sleeping back in the room after painting would be appreciated or is it best to avoid painting altogether or am I just overthinking? Lol!

Thanks.

Almost all paints are low VOC now, especially bog-standard water based interior paints, so it’s not really an issue.

Get a low VOC paint and ventilate the painting area. Start early in the morning so it’s dry by bedtime. The toddler across the hall is not an issue at all.

Yeah you can buy ultra low VOC paints too. Dulux is just low VOC, but Farrow and Ball and Crown BreatheEasy are ultra low (basicaly negligible). Paint first thing, leave windows open and it’ll be fine by bedtime.

We use Lakeland Paints. They’re completely voc free (not an advert - we’ve just re-done my teenagers bedroom and it was very expensive!). I think they say they’re actually edible. There is no smell. Colours are gorgeous. Goes on beautifully.

DH has asthma and DD gets headaches walking within 20 metres of a Lush store and we have no issues with this stuff.

They only sell in 5ltr tins though. I didn’t need that much white for the ceiling and coving so tried Little Green from a decorating store nearby. Also gorgeous and only a slight smell for about an hour until it dried. Liked it so much I bought some coloured paint and re-painted my office with it.
