How can I have a cosy but tasteful living room when I have a black leather sofa?

I’m finally getting round to decorating my living room but because I’m replacing the flooring, my budget sadly won’t stretch to new a new sofa. I have a 3 seater and 2 matching chairs (modern, square shape but big and comfy) which isn’t my vibe whatsoever but they’ll have to do for now.

I want soft and cosy but I can’t think how to achieve this with an ugly black sofa and chairs! The walls are currently stark white and definitely need warming up so any colour suggestions welcome. I’ve also got my eye on a gorgeous oak sideboard on fb marketplace but I’m worried this might clash? I just can’t see past the black leather Confused

You could go for a natural wood, greenery type vibe. So, I'd put lots of neutral coloured cushions/throws on the sofa and chairs - grey, beige, natural fibres. A grey or neutral rug, then some plants. The oak sideboard would fit with the natural wood theme. Kind of like this picture, or some of the other ideas here: https://www.digsdigs.com/black-sofa-ideas-for-living-room/

I'm probably in the minority, but I like dark and moody interiors, so I would embrace the black. I'd have at least one black wall and black curtains, cushions, etc. I would have other dark ish green walls, maybe with huge botanical paper, rugs cushions, huge plants and some wood side tables, etc, as I think the wooden furniture would go well. Lots of moody paintings or prints, mirrors, etc. Lots of gold accents, cushions, throws, etc. Highlight odd things with gold, maybe spray frames, vases, statues, etc. Loads of lamps.

Or go a bit lighter with mustard walls and cayenne accents, in amongst the black?

Thanks so much @SilenceInside

I think natural wood, some greenery and lots of plush cushions and throws is the way to go. I know mumsnet hates the dreaded neutrals but I think something like this, but a bit less “perfect”, might work.

Could you get some sofa covers? Then add some cushions and a contrasting throw.

That sounds fabulous! I love the maximalist style but I couldn’t live with it, unfortunately. I have a very busy mind and find calm, soft surroundings work best.

You can work around neutral coloured sofas, even if it’s a dark colour in my opinion. Could you go dark for the walls? And then bring warm tones onto the sofas with lots of cushions and blankets. Lamps are also great for adding coziness along with candles. So are rugs.

I'd use images of the black leather eames lounge chair as inspiration for how to make black leather look chic. Here are some images I quickly picked out. Are there any options to replace the two chairs at all with more neutral coloured chairs?

Also do you have the room to have some bookshelves? They always make rooms look nicer.

Those rooms are quite masculine and busy for me @Flyingtonight almost like a student flat, sorry! I have a gorgeous bookcase in my dining room so no need for shelves in the living room

Fb marketplace have loads of sofas on there at the moment so you could swap it for something else? Might work out cheaper than spending on cushions and throws

Matformouse · 25/11/2024 17:22

Pink cushions

I've the same problem stuck with ugly dark brown leather sofas. Blues and greens make it look too harsh and neutrals highlight the brown. I've found pinks to be a colour that softens the dark leather. Cushions and a rug. I'd keep the white walls and throw a load of blush pinks around and perhaps gold frames on the walls.

I agree with natural neutral colours, soft greys, sage green, creams. Use lots of different textures, especially soft fluffy throws.

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 25/11/2024 17:32

I'd cover it with a throw or sofa cover - the black leather doesn't need to be visible

PiggieWig · 25/11/2024 17:43

I'd suggest Mellow Mocha for your walls. It's a lovely neutral with a slightly pinkish hue that looks great with black and/or white.
Soften up your sofa with textured cushions, add plants to the room, and a fluffy cream rug. I think it would be really cosy - as others have said, natural wood and greenery. I don't think the black sofa is a problem at all.

I can't find a good living room picture but this shows how Mellow Mocha works with black and white.

I wish that's what my student halls looked like back in the day 😂

Please update us once you find your new look. Black leather sofas are notoriously difficult to style, so interested to see how it all pans out.

trickyex · 25/11/2024 19:49

I would sell your sofa set and buy something second hand which is more to your taste. Sofas come up all the time on FB, gumtree, ebay and in larger charity shops.
I think black leather is the hardest sofa option to work with, esp if you want a calm neutral look.
Leather sells well second hand, look on ebay for guide prices.

unlikelywitch · 25/11/2024 21:20

Those cushions are gorgeous @Matformouse!

I’d shop second hand for most things but not sofas! I just know I’d never feel comfortable. Same with beds. I have arranged to pick up the sideboard tomorrow though Grin.

The plan is neutral calming colour on walls, a variety of textures and lighting, wood, and lovely big cushions and throws to cover as much of the black leather as possible!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Paint your sofa with leather paint. I painted the dog's lead after I put it in the wash - the leather lost all its colour - so I painted it and it lasted for years.
