Curtain poles, curtain tracks ,poles with tracks, double tracks .HELP!!

Zero experience despite being in my 70s.
Large room,3 large uvpc sash windows
One tight against wall. Unequal spaces above ie between top of window and ceiling.
I think I'd prefer neat and minimalist
I think I don't want poles but I think this is because I'm stuck in the 1960s and still following my dad's advice to get swish curtain track.
And I'm just not sure about implications for the actual curtains.
Which will need to be bought.
Please send help before head explodes.

I would go for one long pole over the two windows which are close together and have floor length curtains. I think the slidy track thing that you found will probably do the job. Or you could use standard track and have a pelmet?

For the other window there is only room for a curtain on one side. You could maybe have a pole with just one end on it and the other end going into the wall? Again a pelmet might work? It's a tricky one.

Onagoldenautumnday · 29/09/2024 09:03

@Geneticsbunny thank you . I'm ridiculously comforted by the fact that you think it's tricky and it's not just me .

I am glad I have been able to help even if just to point out it's not simple. When I said pelments I meant box pelmets. The tops of whatever you put up need to be the same distance from the ceiling, not the window frames so that it evens out the wonky windows a bit.

Geneticsbunny · 29/09/2024 09:10

If you do a plain pole I would go for something more traditional looking. I think the plain white will jar with the period windows because of the modern style of finials.

Good point. I did think of stud filials.
I was thinking something minimal would "disappear" once curtains up .
But perhaps I need something to balance the look of long curtains.
I may have to buy more paracetamol.

Standard swish track would be easier than hanging poles we recently got https://www.argos.co.uk/product/6234791 snd it was easy to attach. Hang long curtains from it too

AuntieDolly · 29/09/2024 09:36

I'd go with blinds

BamberGirl · 29/09/2024 09:38

I’d go with Roman blinds too, much neater if you want a minimalist look

Onagoldenautumnday · 29/09/2024 09:45

I think I want the track to be minimalist , not the curtains.
I did initially consider blinds but thought that would look too minimalist, verging on cold.
If that makes sense.
I beg everyone's indulgence as Im not clear what I want

@Onagoldenautumnday You need a recess bracket for the single window. There are various options, especially with the single window.

My suggestions would be roman blinds with dress curtains.

Thanks @schloss .Blinds and dress curtains sound a good idea!
Would one recessed fitting alongside 2 that aren't look odd ? Should I have all recessed do you think .
How do I have blind and dress curtain fitting together ? Sorry if being stupid and annoying .

Match the finials of the poles, so the opposite end of the recessed pole has the same finials as the 2 ends of the pole which are not recessed, that should tie them together and not look odd.

Blinds are fitted as normal above the sash windows and can be opened and closed. Dress curtains do not open and close (so less fabric), but look as though they do! They are not joined to the blinds at all but are normally the same fabric, or tonal so there is a commonality between the blinds and curtains. You could also use pelmets with them.

If you do use dress curtains there is a possibility you could have a pair of them at the single sash window as they will not cover as much of the window. If I get a chance I will see if I can draw a diagram!

schloss · 29/09/2024 16:51

Pretty rough and ready diagram - roman blinds with floor length dress curtains at each window. Also a couple of random pics, one with pelmets.

Wow , that's so helpful thank you . You must have experience in this field
I'm currently blocking up mouse holes with stainless steel mesh -almost my area of expertise- and I'm afraid more questions may follow...

Do think about how much day light you want to block out of the room though…blinds block light at the top when up and curtains the sides, think of the %.
if you have blinds and dress curtains then you block more light. Depends on personal preference and how big the windows are/which way they face.

TwistedSisters · 29/09/2024 17:48

I definitely think roman blinds would look best. Wouldn't be cold at all if really quality patterned fabric was used.

You are right of course, I do however think with tall and multiple sash windows, setting the blinds almost just below the ceiling, with a large number of folds reduces the blocking of light.

What are views on roller rather than Roman blinds?
Glass in windows measures 150 x75 cm
Room is about 15 ft by 20 .

Personally I think roman blinds suit sash windows better but saying that, there are roller blinds which are very discreet. If you were still thinking of pelmets you would not see them at all. It does totally depend on what look you are hoping for as to what works best.

schloss · 29/09/2024 19:10

There are some roller blinds which come with a pelmet attached as standard.

Onagoldenautumnday · 01/10/2024 09:17

The replies here have been so helpful and helped me to work out what I want .
I'm currently thinking of roller blinds with dress curtains.
The room gets a lot of sun from midday onwards and gets very hot .
If anyone has any energy left and any views on blinds keeping the room cooler I would be very grateful.
We have new double glazed windows and I can't help thinking that blinds on the inside won't help much ?
Reflective blinds are advertised on line ..

In a period house, I think shutters look much better than blinds. I’m not sure there is enough space above the windows for a curtain pole (but if you do go down that route, I would suggest unpainted wood as it’s a warmer look.) Wooden shutters - which would work in white - would look better in that room - neater but also beautiful.

I live in an Edwardian house and have a mixture of shutters and curtains in the house, depending on the room. It looks fab, even if I do say so myself!
