How old is your sofa?

We ordered a sofa from John Lewis 3.5 years ago and the seat cushions are very sinky already, one of them is a bit better than the other, but it's really putting pressure on my lower back now and I get achey from sitting on it. I thought £1k sofa should last a bit longer but do I just have unrealistic expectations? We're not large people, me and my husband, so I really wanted it to hold up a lot better.

Current one is 5 years old, cheap ikea. Previous ones were DDs, sold at 10 years old to new owners (huge) and 8 years old ex husband still has. I've had one last 20, 12 years at my parents then 8 years with me!

Feel I may need to change my user name given the age of some of your sofas! Mine is only 10 years old….

Nutsabouttopic · 03/09/2024 22:21

Our sofas are 22 years old. They were bought by the previous owners on their winnings in Los Vegas. Bought in a local furniture shop but we were told that they are Italian made. They paid over £3000 , a huge amount of money. The previous owners were downsizing and suite wouldn't fit in new house so we inherited it. It had a type of suede material which finally showed signs of wear and tear so we got it recovered five years ago and it's still in great condition and very comfortable.

24 years old. It's a Multiyork and has washable loose covers which we've replaced twice.

BreadMachine · 13/09/2024 21:09

My multiyork sofa is 16 years old and still in fantastic condition and very comfortable

I think about 12 years old. My husband bought them second hand in vgc when he moved into this house 10 years ago. They’re still sooo comfy and just look better as time goes on. They’re tan leather, and were v v expensive new.

Tristar15 · 13/09/2024 21:12

8 years old. From Fenwick’s. Around £1000 each. In great condition, won’t need to be replacing them soon. So I think you’re right to expect yours to have lasted longer.

Gatekeeper · 13/09/2024 21:14

Our.sofa is leather and coming up to 28 years old. Was £1500 new and still has plenty of years left in it.

Manasprey · 13/09/2024 21:18

8 years old. £2000 for 2 reclining sofas from furniture village. Most expensive furniture we'd ever bought but the kids were past the baby stage by then and we were replacing our ancient, bargain land of leather stuff. They're still in great condition. Apart from dh's side. He's only a couple of stone heavier than me but he sits heavy.

Kitkat1523 · 13/09/2024 21:22

Sofa in lounge…..8 years next
sofa in family room…..23 years ikea ektorp ….just moved onto the 3rd set of loose covers….but still as comfortable as ever
sofa in shed …..Dfs leather ……17 years old ….bit tatty, used to be the lounge sofa….still really comfortable

Loveatortie · 13/09/2024 21:22

17 years we have had our sofa,it was 2nd hand then. Originally bought from John Lewis. It's still very comfy 😁🥂

notacooldad · 13/09/2024 21:27

We have just got rid of ours. It was 2x3 seater and 1x2seater.it was 19 years old and from dfs.
Only one part was one and that's where DH sat.
It survived the kids growing up!

TheCatterall · 13/09/2024 21:30

Ikea Ektorp chaise lounge 3 seater. Bought it second hand about 15 years ago I think. And it was about 4 years old then. It’s amazing. No cushion sagging and people regularly sleep and stay over on it. The cushions and covers are all removable for washing. The cushion liners are removable as well.

I’m making new covers for it now as the original ones are so faded and I loathe the fabric/patterns of the current ones. And the cost…

I've had my La-Z-Boy sofa about 5 years now and it's just as good as the day we had it delivered. It was quite pricy as has all the top notch features but it was worth it.

Solonga · 13/09/2024 22:12

My five year old Next clearance one is a bit sad, DH reckons I'm a bit hard on them and plonk myself down hard so nothing really lasts, I try to sit delicately but sometimes forget.

Anyway browsing sofas and I see that M&S don't do large furniture any more just coffee tables basically, they had some nice sofas and they were in the large stores to sit on but no more it seems. I liked the look of a GPlan one in JL which was over £2k but it's not on display anywhere and I'm not paying that without seeing and sitting on it in real life. I will probably end up with another £500 Next clearance one if one comes up I like, the one I have got will probably be with us for another couple of years as this could be quite a protracted exercise

Anisty · 13/09/2024 22:16

About 15 yrs i think. It's leather and still in excellent condition.

Tworedgeraniums · 13/09/2024 22:18

22 year old Laura Ashley (did spend about five years barely used).

got horrendously saggy the last couple of years, I got a local upholsterer to take a look at it, he made two new seat cushions to go in existing ok covers. He also found a ‘cable’ underneath had snapped and replaced that. Cost about £300 a month ago.

it’s like brand new. Exceptionally pleased.

Isabelle70 · 14/09/2024 08:22

My new one is 6 years old but the one before that was 16.
The old one had the foam in the seat cushions replaced and it gave it a new life. I used foamcushion.co.uk and you can post your empty covers to them.
My new sofa, I opted for a better seat cushion as I didn't want to have to do the daily plumping.

PicturesOfLily · 14/09/2024 09:00

Ours is 14 years old. We’ll get a new one when we move as we couldn’t get the seat cushions back in the covers properly when we washed them and ddog chewed a bit of the foam. It’s hidden but I know it’s there! Other than that, it’s still really comfy and we recently got a cheap cover from Dunelm which makes it look like a new sofa!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 14/09/2024 09:02

19 years old. Laura Ashley. Bit knackered, but ok, but not replacing it whilst we still have a cat.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 14/09/2024 09:06

We also have six sofas.
our main ones are 10 years old from DFS.
the leather colour has faded a little from the sun so I’ve treated that a couple of times but otherwise great.
