Would you expect the builders to do this job?

Hiya,

I'm genuinely surprised our builders haven't done this but maybe I'm wrong and they wouldn't expect to.

Having a porch built and some internal decoration/updating done. This included replacing all internal doors. Internal doors came primed but not painted.

The builders have painted the doors downstairs on both sides where they were also decorating the rooms but have only painted the landing facing side of the bedroom and bathroom doors. They weren't decorating inside those rooms but I would have expected them to paint both sides of the doors since they installed them. Or at least, if this wasn't to be included, I would have expected them to flat this up and quote us for it. In my mind it's obvious we would want both sides of the doors painted.

What do you think? I'm totally inexperienced at these things.

Thanks

X

That was meant to say "flag" this up. Not sure how to edit post

Would expect both sides but can see why they might not

Do you feel comfortable querying it?

Sunnyshoeshine · 06/07/2024 21:31

Our decorator did this as well. I didnt realise our quote didnt include painting the inside of the doors. They offered to quote it for us but we are planning on decorating those rooms anyway in the next 12months, so decided to leave as is and just do it all then.

Janefx40 · 06/07/2024 21:36

@zebedeehadapoint thanks. Yes I will query but they will just charge us more. I think they're not very good at realising what isn't obvious to the client. I think most people would expect both sides to be painted but I'm more than happy for them to quote me extra - I just wish they had done this to start with.

@Sunnyshoeshine thanks for this. We're not doing these rooms for a while so it's a bit annoying! But I guess that is standard.

Builders/decorators should include in the quote (and you should read and agree or query then) what they intend to do. I once had an extra floor put in and was shocked when I got a separate bill for the stairs - he said it was not on the original quote and I naively thought well you can't get to the additional floor without stairs so assumed it was included! Now I know to go through quotes very carefully to make sure we both agree with what they are doing.

Janefx40 · 07/07/2024 08:11

Thanks @mondaytosunday ! That's crazy. Yes I think what annoys me is that I would obviously want to paint both sides so why didn't they quote me for it? Of course they are entitled to charge me but why on earth would I not want the insides painted? They are the experts so in my head it is up to them to recognise these things.

Same with the stairs in your case!! Obviously charge more but either quote or at least flag up to tbe customer that this isn't included for whatever reason!

Oh my we have just booked a decorator, I've now messaged him confirming he'll be painting both sides of my doors so thank you for this post.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/07/2024 08:36

Not all doors are the necessarily painted the same colour, sometimes doors may be 'matched' to the room so if the room isn't to be painted I wouldn't expect that side of the door to be.

Pastimperfection · 07/07/2024 08:46

We have decorators booked for our hall and definitely would not expect them to paint the reverse side of the doors. Would you not discuss the paint colours for those doors if that is what you wanted.

Janefx40 · 07/07/2024 17:22

@Pastimperfection it's because they are new doors that the same team have installed. I wouldn't expect them to paint both sides of existing doors if they weren't doing the rooms. But new doors come just primed so seems odd not to finish off the job
