What would do with this fire place?

I just don't like it at all. Want to get rid of the brick totally and maybe open it up.

It's an electric fire. DP would like a wood burning stove but we would need to check if the chimney can accommodate that.

Any ideas?

I love it! The oak mantle beam is such a safe (dull) choice, I have one but I'd prefer what you have. Sure the wallpaper, the home sign and the fake fire need to go - but what you are left with is a simple beautiful design.
I would put a wood burner in too, I love mine.

I would paint the brick white personally.
