Help! Sorry if this is mad : I’m panicking

The decorator (finally) arrived this morning. He opened the wallpaper and there are inconsistencies in the pattern! On one roll there are small black marks and on another a line!

The wall paper is Cole and Sons cost over £420 a role. I have tried to speak to the shop I bought it from (left three answer phone messages but no reply). The wallpaper guy wants to know if I want him to proceed ( he charges me £400 a day and I will have to pay for today and tomorrow regardless ) or to rearrange. I have no clue what to do. Just wondered what you would do.

I feel so stupid : I probably could have checked the rolls but didn’t think to. Sorry for asking : I’m in work so can’t run out and exchange it (shop isn’t based where I live but I might be able to buy more from John Lewis. But what if the original shop won’t replace it? I’ll be out of pocket by nearly £2k). WWYD?

Can you post images?

Mogs43 · 30/01/2024 12:30

I’m in work and only have what’s app videos. Will see if I can take a screen shot? Thank you

Cole and Son have said they will look at the what’s app videos and may be able to get me replacement wall paper tomorrow but no guarantees / wall paper guy is only booked till 4.30 tomorrow .

Yes that first one is faulty, have you tried a magic eraser, do they not wash off? If it is absolutely printed I think it needs returning and replacing, sorry,

Freakinfraser · 30/01/2024 12:55

Sorry just seen, they both are, I’d see if the marks can be removed , if jot, I’m afraid it’s a return job.

Lifebeganat50 · 30/01/2024 12:58

At £420 a roll I’d not be trying to remove the marks! I’d be going after the supplier for your out of pocket expenses too (and find yourself another decorator-no decorator is worth £400 a day!)

I would, I’d attempt one mark, if they wipe off, then she saves her wallpaper dude and money. If they don’t, then she needs to rearrange the wallpaper guy and get more paper.

op, I’d also check is that throughout the roll or just at rhe end?

SoftPillowAllNight · 30/01/2024 13:06

Do you have a corner behind immovable furniture where some of the imperfections could hide? Will save you a lot of headache!

Mogs43 · 30/01/2024 13:11

Thanks. Unfortunately the room is tiny so no hiding places.

I will find out if it’s throughout the roll.

Cole and Sons have said they don’t have any of the colour in stock. So would need to rearrange the whole thing (agh my bed and wardrobe have been dismantled!).

They have offered a refund but I’ll be out of pocket for wallpaper guy., Expensive lesson??

will also attempt one mark.

These are both just marks from the outside of the roll, where the edge lay. Often wallpapers add a circumference of a roll to the length with the expectation the outer bit will be cut off. At most you are losing 20cm per roll.

Yes I wondered if it was just the edge, and if so, I’d just cut that off, assuming it’s not measured so tight there is ni spare, which would be silly,

You need to go to them for your out of pocket expenses ie the decorator. THEY supplied faulty goods, it’s for them to put you back to the financial position you’d be in if the goods hadn’t been faulty. Why would you not do that? Make sure you get an invoice from the decorator to pass on

Mogs43 · 30/01/2024 15:18

So it gets worse. One of the rolls whilst officially the same colour is actually different when up (see attached photo). They have said they will refund the cost of the bad rollls but not the expense of the wallpaper guy.

He’s due to come back tomorrow but I just don’t know what to do? WWYD? I have asked them about the costs but they have said no.

Did the rolls all have the same serial number? If not, then you're a bit stuffed tbh.

And £400 a day? I'll come and do it for £200 a day!

Mogs43 · 30/01/2024 15:35

They all have the same serial number. The price of the decorator is currently the least of my problems. Unfortunately…

I asked Cole and Sons about the expenses and they said no , they will only pay for the wallpaper. I have to pay the wallpaper guy tomorrow regardless . WWYD.

Part of the wall looks like it should. Photo attached.

i know this is pathetic but I can’t stop crying. Have had enough. It’s so hard doing everything alone : nothing seems to go right.

Have left work early to come and deal with this (great). It looks even worse in real life. Black marks down one roll, the other is a completely different colour and the other has a big mark running through it. Just don’t know what to do . It’s a mess. Sorry for all the messages just having a melt down. Didn’t think this would be so difficult?

The black marks run throughout the roll. The other roll is a completely different colour.

Just got off the phone to Cole and Son: they have found some stock in the warehouse so I should be able to get it tonight. Fingers crossed.

The guy can only do one more day (he has other jobs booked in). He originally estimated it would take him two days to do the room. He’s only actually done one wall. I have no idea how long it will take him to get the old wallpaper down and replace it with new.

In the 24 hours available : should I just ask him to focus on getting the one wall right (not keen on feature walls but may be easiest) or try and get him to do the whole room?

all a mess : I am sorry for so many questions.

Small. Claims. Court. For the costs of the decorator. As I said previously make sure you get an invoice, and create a paper/email trail with the supplier -you’ll need it for the small claims court

Freakinfraser · 30/01/2024 18:25

I’d also be emailing them and saying you are now commencing legal action via small claims. Make a threat , however the reality is you should have checked the paper, and irs your decision to proceed knowing it was faulty instead of delaying the papering. And they have acted to resolve quickly, I’m sorry.

Mogs43 · 30/01/2024 19:19

Thank you. I have an invoice and established an email trail, sent them videos / photos. They have apologised and provided new wallpaper. I can ask again about the £ for the wallpaper guy when I've heard what he says tomorrow (how long it will take/his availability etc). Hoping it can be done soon as i have no bed or wardrobe /all dismantled.

I hadn’t appreciated quite how badly damaged the wallpaper was : if it had been just a few black marks I may have been able to live with that but not a completely different tone on one sheet (he only noticed late this afternoon). I had to pay the guy for today and tomorrow regardless. Appreciate I could have opened the rolls when they were delivered at the weekend but beyond checking that the bar codes matched I genuinely didn’t know that was something you were expected to do. I thought it was quality checked (especially when you are paying a lot). Live and learn.

Thanks again for all your help and advice. Appreciated.
