Inspiration for entrance matting and stairs (pictures attached)

Hello
This is the first of what will be many 'looking for inspiration' threads by me. Bought and moved into a house which - although habitable - needs some sprucing up, on a relatively tight budget. I like prefer semi-modern, clean lines rather than country / shabby chic.
I want to replace the entrance matting and also change the way the stairs are carpeted (pls see pics).

  1. The coir matting looks ugly and dated - i would like something in black, preferably not coir, or do you reckon i get rid of it entirely and just put a large doormat?
  2. The stairs could possibly be fully carpeted than using a runner, and potentially repainted- what colour of paint?

What sort of tradesperson could do both jobs do you reckon?

You can get the coir replaced with door matting carpet so a carpet fitter would do that. I like black painted stairs with a light coloured stair carpet runner. I think you would have to do the painting yourself or get a decorator and a carpet fitter would do the rest.

Thanks @Toomuchleopard what should the considerations between a runner and fully carpeted stairs be? which do you reckon are easier to clean and safer to walk on?

A fully fitted carpet would be much cheaper, easier to clean and better to walk on. A runner looks nice but I think the edge wooden bits would be full of dust all the time. I like the look of a runner but I probably wouldn’t have one for the reasons above!

Do you already have the runner? If so, I'd keep it, it looks nice.

Black mat will show all the dirt, but then again, all door mats do! So maybe something easy to wash/remove and shake/vacuum.

I'd paint the hand rail a darker colour if you're wanting more drama. We just used 'Fetish' by Graham and Brown, and previously had 'Railings' by farrow and ball. Both smart, classic choices.

@Seaside3 yes- already have the runner from ground floor to first floor, but carpeted stairs from first to loft (which looks much neater imho). The stairs around the runner gather dust and look dirty just as @Toomuchleopard said above. Stairs are white and the dust shows. Ideally want stairs with a wider tread and less steep so might just save up to get them redone next year.

We have used Tretford goat hair carpet. It comes in a million (approx) colours.
we are a 6 indoor bike household and the carpet has been in our hall for 9 years and looks fresh still .
