What would go with this 1980s dining table?

It's a mahogany and this shade of green. Currently paired with terracotta and an off white/beige dullness. It's a north facing and cold room. It needs lifting with new walls and curtains and maybe carpet. Thanks!

Pink and green are complementary colours so I think the green would tone down the reds in the mahogany.

There are quite a few William Morris art prints around too, which might work with it, on trend but traditional.

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 05/10/2023 19:13

Yes, it's my mum's room. It was a much wanted dining table and cocktail cabinet that she'd wanted for a long time when she was my age.
I think green, pink and gold would work well. She's going bolder with her bedroom colours which was quite a surprise seeing as she's 84 but the dining room is a challenge due to its coldness and darkness.
We are going to look at paint soon and I'm hoping she'll find something she likes. I've said we can get some samples and I'll happily paint psyches on the walls 😁

The chairs are lovely, I'd look at re-covering. The cabinet, it's not for me at all.

WTF, no idea why that posted 3 times.

ladeluge · 05/10/2023 19:30

I'd paint the much loved cabinet the same color as whatever chair covering you choose. Then I'd introduce some bold reds, russet and green and make it like a forest, big pic of a tree to top it all.

mrsm43s · 06/10/2023 14:15

The picture of the chair looks like it's an advert, rather than your mum's room? I quite like the colours in that - although I guess a bit close to terracotta (it looks pinkier than terracotta to me in that photo). I would do something warm like that, but definitely on all walls, not just a feature wall. And a nice rug on the floor too.

Otherwise, maybe a deepish ochre yellow or olive green? Again around all 4 walls. I'd go for something quite strong personally, rather than a pale colour.

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 06/10/2023 14:47

@DisforDarkChocolate that's ok, I'm not asking if you'd like it.

My mum hasn't the money to be reupholstering anything. It's just the walls and the curtain fabric and probably the carpet.

She's quite liking some of the pinks in the colour palettes I got her. The room is too small and dark to take a strong colour but I agree it would look nice.

I think I've talked her into a trailing plant for the top of the cabinet.

Champagne and pale gold look lovely next to the chair.

The shade of green in the chairs matches closely to Apple by Little Greene.

The room is rather neglected and she doesn't eat in there unless it's a family meal but would do if it was revamped. I want to help her have a lovely home with the limited funds she has. Her taste might not be to the taste of others but some posters have been unnecessarily rude. For an 84 year old age has quite young taste but the furniture is from the 80s. It's balancing the retro of that with her more modern current tastes.

I quite like the chair, it’s a citrine colour. The cabinet is another story though. There are so many better storage solutions. Can I ask are you quite elderly?

Are you quite elderly?

WTAF are you seriously asking OP this question? What a horrible thing to say after OP has made it quite clear that she has no other option. What a bully

gluenotsoup · 06/10/2023 17:47

Pick what makes your mum happy!

MerryChristmasToYou · 06/10/2023 17:48

Not RTFT but the furniture looks good quality and fit for purpose. It's not currently fashionable, but might be worth a few bob in about 20 yrs time. Use it and enjoy it.

Findyourneutralspace · 06/10/2023 17:52

I really like the deep pink in the photo with the chair in it. I like the chair and the upholstery and dressed right you can make the cabinet work with the scheme.

amidsummernightsdream · 06/10/2023 17:57

Farrow and ball card room green would be lovely with these. You can get the colour mixed and matched at b&q or local diy place if you dont want to pay farrow and ball prices

amidsummernightsdream · 06/10/2023 18:00

Or if you dont fancy dark, a soft pink would be nice too. Although it’s tricker to pick a pink that isnt too sickly. A warm beige might be good too.

Either are more in fashion and will update the room while complementing the existing furiture.

AnneKipankitoo · 06/10/2023 18:05

Farrow and Ball do Hay . I have it in a North Facing Utility Room but I do have skylights in it. We also have it in our entrance vestibule. The vestibule is East and North facing. I have a pic with our dark door.

EmmaPaella · 06/10/2023 18:08

I love those chairs! I agree a nice Farrow and Ball paint would make the room look really nice. I like the Hay above. My DM has a fairly dark green/blue. No idea what shade sorry.

B&Q Santa Fe, light and neutral and inexpensive, used in grandparents hall and living room with dark furniture.

Thank you @EmmaPaella

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 06/10/2023 20:45

I like the Santa Fe but fear mum would deem it insipid. She was eyeing up a dark dusky pink earlier. That might be better for a carpet but it would look nice it's just going to be a massive change for her going darker and colourful after a lifetime of pale walks. The most exciting has been an accent wall 😁

It would go really well with Farrow and Ball Bancha, but it a dark colour.
