Living room restyle - where to start?

We've been living in our house for 6 years now. We haven't updated the downstairs at all. It really needs some redecorating. However, I'm a bit clueless when it comes to this type of thing and I just don't know where to start. Whenever I think about the living room in particular, I just get stuck. I can't visualise what I want to do with it.

My question is where do I start with this type of project? I suppose I'm looking for tips really to help me move forward with it.

Agree you need to sort out the artex and carpet first. From your description it also sounds like you need more attractive storage options. As an alternative to built in a small sideboard (on vinterior you can put in desired dimensions and preferred style) in each alcove and maybe have some shelves above. An ottoman or coffee table that contains storage might also be a good idea. Paint colour is ironically probably the last thing to choose (beyond a general 'I want pink/blue/green), that way you can choose a shade that coordinated precisely with your other things.
