Made to measure disaster

I had blinds and curtains made by Hilary’s. The blinds are ok but the large curtains are a disaster!!!

I just wanted plain white over my kitchen bifolds. I choose this colour which is described as white /off white.( see pic)

The problem is in real life they are completely cream almost magnolia. They clash with my decor and walls the other window has white blinds. I’m I allowed to do anything about it ? It’s made to measure so I guess I can’t complain/return or can I? They are mainly polyester and small amount of Cotten so not amenable to a colour change.

so depressing !

If the colour is different to what you thought you were ordering and you can demonstrate that, then yes you should be entitled to a refund/ another set or replacement. At the end of the you did not get what you thought you were paying for.

Clymene · 01/04/2023 22:36

Have you got a photo of what they look like?

Wheresthebloodynurofen · 01/04/2023 22:36

Did you get a fabric sample?

FloatingRodger · 01/04/2023 22:36

Did you not get a sample of the material?

ApolloandDaphne · 01/04/2023 22:38

Did you not see the fabric before you ordered? I've had stuff form Hillary's before and I always saw the fabrics in my house before I ordered.

OhOGee · 01/04/2023 22:40

I'm sorry but I think it's your responsibility to get a sample to see the true colour. Obviously If it's different to the sample, then you could contact and see if they will re make them.

CC4712 · 01/04/2023 22:42

I was calling them tomorrow to come to measure and advise. Do they not give fabric samples out so you can see the colour first against your walls and other furnishings?

Nogg · 01/04/2023 22:46

Yes I did get the sample sent but it was very tiny and small…….looks different to the whole giant curtains made up over bifold windows from ceiling to floor! . Nothing like the picture attached.

The original sales person was very rushed when he came round after 9pm so never had much of a look . It’s a very expensive mistake so wondering if there was anything I could do. I partly picked this because was going to get white voile but this was on sale so thought curtains would be more useful but now depressed about it.

I'm sorry OP - that's a horrible feeling. If the fabric is the same fabric that you chose from the sample then that's not the supplier's fault. If you saw and approved of the fabric they're not to know what was in your mind's eye when you ordered.

Nogg · 01/04/2023 22:54

I’m thinking of replacing them with ikea white voile curtains but they are 270cm long.
the rest of the room is bright white and greys so they really clash!

The samples are so tiny and their pricing is so clandestine. I was trying to keep the price down but obviously this was a false economy! I’m happy with the other 5 Roman blinds though. I guess they won’t care about the bad description and photos.

You won't know unless you ask. Take photos of the curtains in different lights. Send them to them and ask what can be done, you haven't got what you wanted.

Orangebadger · 02/04/2023 08:07

You would be entitled to a refund if the sample doesn't look the same colour as the what you have now paid for Look up consumer rights act 2018.

Dotcheck · 02/04/2023 08:13

Well, you chose it using the fabric sample so I’m not sure there’s anything you can do.
If it’s any consolation, I think it’s common for this to happen. At least, it does on the YouTube designers I follow ☺️

Nogg · 02/04/2023 09:13

It turns out it is hard to capture the colour. My house is mainly on the cold spectrum
and these are vey cream-give of a yellow light.

i think also they were not the look I wanted which was more light and floaty.

In that sense I think on reflection hilarys we’re too rushed and not interested in advising on fabric etc. I meant he literally tried to make me flick thorough the catalogue and decide five blinds in 10 minutes.

its a expensive depressing mistake !

Try holding a piece of blackout lining behind them to see if that makes a difference.

I suspect it could be yellowness of the light coming through that's making them look more yellow.

If you prefer the colour with the black out lining, then pay a local seamstress to add blackout linings.

Nogg · 02/04/2023 10:30

I don’t think it’s the light. They look yellow without the light. I notice they have a similar cream lining and this is not helping.

I wonder if I could sell them on eBay. But cheaper voiles sheer curtains on line. I have the tract and measurements now. Or I could just have the linings without the heavy fabric?

Hello
i read your post and wondered how you got on with these curtains.

I just posted to ask help for white curtains, though I don’t want light and floaty. The point about the light turning them more yellowish is a good one.
I hope you got ones you love now
