Blue living room - what blue?!

DH and I have agreed on the colour blue for our living room. It's quite small and used as a grown up 'snug' so we're happy to go dark-ish. Last house was painted in Oval Room Blue but we want to go darker because of the space.

Can't decide. Have done seven tester pots and don't like any.

If you have a blue living room, what colour/name/shade is it???

Dulux heritage Oxford blue. Love!

This is what my living room is too. It’s nice.

Sorry meant to say… I found a lot of the colours including the f&b ones mentioned had a really grey undertone (maybe as it’s a north facing room…) but this one has a purply undertone if anything!

I agree it has a purplely undertone. It’s quite a warm blue.

What were the seven tester pots that you disliked, OP?

We have f&b hague blue in the study (think it was johnstones paint colour match though - I don't like f&b paint as I find it so unforgiving if it gets marked/scuffed). We do love it - paint skirtings the same colour too. F&b also advise on what white to go on ceiling - as you want to make sure that matches too and isn't too stark.

Is that your actual room? We're looking for built in furniture just like that for our living room.

We've got dulux sapphire salute. Absolutely love it

It is. We had those built by Tom Howley - the kitchen designer company. We'd originally put down a deposit on a kitchen with them but then decided to move so used them to build us these bookshelves instead so that we didn't lose our deposit.

Tbh they weren't cheap and I was actually really disappointed with the initial finish. They did send someone else over to rectify the problems and he did a great job so it all came good in the end but for the price I expected better first time around!

WeAreTheHeroes · 05/03/2023 17:53

Thank you - we don't have a Tom Howley budget, but the design is just what we're looking for. I used to work in a role where we provided a service to Tom H so I have met him many times, before he sold his business.

We have just one wall in stiffkey blue in our very small lounge and love it

I have midnight blue by Crown. It's dark but brighter than the dirty/grey tinged farrow and ball colours suggested. Not saying dirty to be mean, it was acknowledged by their colour guru on a podcast as their signature tone.

Mine is Antibes, by B&Q.

We have that in our bedroom - lovely shade of blue.

GoinSouth · 06/03/2023 16:44

We're due to start painting our newly skimmed lounge walls and it's taken ages to decide what colour. I bought cushion covers first, beautiful designs in soft blues, greens and corals and basing the colour from these so we're probably going to go with a teal blue though not 100% decided yet. It's a cold room, may need warming up with coral pink.

Saz12 · 06/03/2023 19:23

OP, if all of the 7 samples are in the “probably about what I’m looking for” colour, and you don’t like any of them... then maybe you might be wrong about the idea of what would work.
Sorry. But it happens to me constantly: I decide to paint a room in “a willowy green”, buy 3 samples, then another 3... then realise the problem isn’t the precise shade of green, it’s that I’d prefer the room in a wholly different colour.

You shouldn’t paint a small room in those shades of dark blue, it will make the room look even smaller, go light/pastel shades .

@WeAreTheHeroes , I recently saved this built-in shelves hack on Instagram:

It's obviously not the same quality as @userloadsofnumbers' custom-built solid wood shelves, but still looks really nice in my opinion. There are also much more detailed instruction on that posters blog: homeonharbor.com/2022/08/21/the-ultimate-guide-to-ikea-hacks/

@ChinoiserieNerd great link!

WeAreTheHeroes · 06/03/2023 21:39

@ChinoiserieNerd - thank you. I've got a few of those saved in Pinterest. We need something the depth of Kallax that doesn't look like a load of kallaxes stuck together as DP has an extensive vinyl collection. We had a quote of £5k for a MDF media wall. A bit steep!

Thank you - back to the drawing board!

Coat paints -The Drink. Very inky blue but looks very dark bluey green with sun on it-I love it!

That is steep. We were quoted similar for one wall of our sitting room and eventually got two walls of Vitsoe shelving and drawers for less. Really good quality and I adore them but they are metal and very minimal so not to everyone's taste.

You shouldn’t paint a small room in those shades of dark blue, it will make the room look even smaller, go light/pastel shades.

No colour of paint will make a small room look bigger. However, painting all 4 walls, ceiling and woodwork the same colour will blur the edges and dark paint can make it actually quite hard to see into the corners so blurs things even more. My sitting room is a good size and painted a light colour but we've painted all the small rooms (bathrooms, utility, DS's bedroom) in the house darker colours and it does make them feel cozy and special in comparison to the more public rooms that are all light with big windows.
