New sofa, empty space help?!

Hello mumsnet!

I'm normally more at home in the conception topic, but yesterday I treated myself to a new sofa (I am head over heels with it and all I can think about is when it will arrive), but I need to rejig my living room a little for it, and I am hoping you can help me come up with ideas to fill the new space I'll have!

Currently my sofa sits back against a wall that is slightly set back, but my new sofa is too long to be there so will need to come towards leaving the gap behind it.
I've tried to draw the current set up and my idea, (I am no artist so it's not the best!) but must stress the gap behind the sofa is only 9 inches - not the mile I've made it look like in the drawing.

In my room against two angled walls I currently have two Ikea Laiva bookcases, and I am thinking of putting them behind the sofa with a third to fill that space - not overloading them but having a few books / decorations on them.

Any opinions - or how would you fill the gap?

oooh @GetOffYourPhone do you have a picture? I'd not thought about extending them so they were floor to ceiling - but now I'm thinking about it in my head that's how I expect it to look anyway! 🫢 you may well have solved my problem there

I’m not at home so this will have to do - obviously I don’t have the tree up anymore 😂different style to what you are going for but just for height versus sofa.

That’s gorgeous,,,

It might look nice widthways across the room, just after the door, and facing the window.

Try asking that Feng Shui dude on you tube? @ DearModern (i had to put a space in as no user called that). Would be interesting to see how he does it. "And now you know!" (his catch phrase)

We have a sofa that is a few inches off the wall because of a vertical beam.

my dh made a skinny console table that fits around the beam. It has 2 lamps on it and succulents in lovely pots. It looks good and much better than a sofa against a wall with a gap, which is how we used to have it. .

ElleBelleLou · 12/02/2023 17:22

@DillDanding that's my plan now I've given it some thought

Last night I pulled my old sofa out to where the new one will be, moved some other bits to sort of 'block' where everything will sit - and found a console table on Amazon that's the perfect size Glitterball

My estimated delivery date for the sofa is 4th April so hopefully I'll remember to update this read when everything is in its place and sorted!

I wanna see too!! :)

Oh I read through hoping for an update photo! I was going to say some kind of table behind, like it seems you eventually decided on.

ElleBelleLou · 11/04/2023 16:25

Hello again! Glad someone commented cause I completely forgot to update - sofa is here, I am in love with it! Haven't yet gotten anything for behind as now the sofa is in and settled I don't feel like the gap is anywhere near as noticeable as I'd anticipated. I'm on the look out for a nice stand up lamp for behind it, but apart from that happy as it is 😊

That looks great! Yeah the gap isn’t hugely noticeable at all.

notanoxfordcomma · 11/04/2023 19:01

Oh I love it too!! I don't think it needs anything, and I think putting a bookcase or whatever there would make it look like you had too much furniture and nowhere to put it, rather than being there on purpose!!

Happy new sofa, OP!

Beautiful!

minipie · 13/04/2023 17:50

Lovely OP! If you can find a very very slim console to go there you might find it useful as a drinks perch especially if you’re not having a coffee table. But agree it doesn’t need anything visually.

I'd get freestanding shelves for the gap instead of bookshelves. https://www.folkhaus.co/shop-all/p/the-shelf-03

I know it's a rental but it's quite easy to take the shelves down again and fill the holes. Could you ask the agent for permission?

If not, then the bookshelves.

We have bookshelves behind the sofa in both the sittingroom and the playroom. As long as there is a shelf at the same height as the top of the sofa (so you don't see the top of books popping up behind the sofa) it looks great. The shelves behind the sofa can be used to store ugly or little used books.
