Massive mistake re window blinds

We had horrible yellow wood blinds from IKEA up for 18 years in the front of our house. Have gone on a bit of a decorating spree. Beautiful dark green walls in the hallway so it was all going well. DH wanted grey carpet and I wanted hessian as it's warmer looking. In the end went for pale silver/greys and it's horribly cold looking with the white woodwork and before the carpet went down we'd ordered new wooden blinds for the front of the house. Wanted shutters but they were twice the price and we had 5 big windows to do. So we went for off white in large slats fitted into the recess.

Big mistake ... the whole thing together is so cold and stark looking and office(y). Am so disappointed but need to make best of it but don't know how 😞.

I love your room now.The curtains look great with the wall and chair colour.
Could you share details of your gorgeous floor?

Tristar15 · 11/07/2024 07:03

I agree that the right curtains will make a difference

NightBirdy · 11/07/2024 07:09

I'm not a fan of blinds, blocking out so much light, most of the view and the option to easily open a window. Houses look "asleep" from the outside when you have blinds installed.
That said the new white ones look 100 times better than the old ones. I think you just need time to get used to the colour change. Do agree with other posters about "dressing" the main windows in some way though.

Sallysoup · 11/07/2024 07:22

It's all coming together now 🙌

I love the mustard colour chair with the flooring, any chance you can remember what colour the floor is?

fluffiphlox · 11/07/2024 09:22

I had a couple of Venetian blinds early in my married life. I would never have them again as they are absolute dust-magnets. As for your current problem I would perhaps dress them with some (ornamental) narrow curtains either side.
Edit: Oops. Didn’t read it all. Looks lovely.

I just went back and looked at your original photos OP, it’s so much better now!

Looks fine but I think the livingroom might benefit from some floor length curtains. Just to hang there at the sides, not that you are going to be closing them over the radiator. You can get away buying a narrow width if not closing so no need to spend a fortune.

I really like it, but agree with this, just needs some pattern.

It's beautiful. I insisted that we had curtains as well as blinds / shutters last year even though my DH and the fitter weren't keen. I loved the shutters, hated the starkness. As soon as the long curtains were up - wow what a difference

deeahgwitch · 13/07/2024 20:10

I far prefer the white blinds to the yellow wooden ones.

Thanks for updating - I read your thread ages ago. It just shows that it takes time and living with a room to work out what it needs. Your curtains look fab with the floor and walls, plus all the bits and bobs added make it look homely now.
I wondered if the holdbacks should be a bit lower down, or I am thinking that because that's how we did it in the 80s/ 90s? Is mid height how it's done now?

BG2015 · 14/07/2024 09:34

Is your wall paint Pigeon? It's lovely.

MiniCooperLover · 21/07/2024 14:36

Chewbecca, yes normally we'd have them lower but they are only there to hold the curtains back as they're heavy and were blocking the light so needed to be up higher.

For those asking the floor is Karndean Morning Oak.

Thanks for the nice comments, it's a relief to have it almost finished.

So we've replaced the small wooden sideboard with a metal shelving unit which I think works really nice (as our new side tables are similar) and tonight the tree went up. 👍
