Could you use hot glue to fix glass shelves to glass bricks to make a set of shelves

You know the sort if 70s glass bricks that sometimes make a wall?

Or is there another sort of glue that might work?

This sounds like a very dangerous way of making shelves 😂

Smartiepants79 · 03/12/2022 17:54

No
Hot glue from a glue gun just peels of shiny surfaces like glass.
Not sure how you glue glass together in a structurally sound type way.

IncompleteSenten · 03/12/2022 17:56

No.
That would be unsafe.

There's a special glue to stick up mirrors on walls.

That might work.

Onnabugeisha · 03/12/2022 17:57

No! Do not even attempt. Hot glue isn’t really designed for non-porus surfaces and certainly not the weight bearing of a shelf.

That might work.

But won't a mirror have a much larger surface area and not have to hold any weight other than the mirror?

Whereas shelves are a small surface area (only the shelf edge) and would be holding whatever was on the shelves?

I would suggest not doing anything that involves glue to get the shelves up OP, but if you do at least test it with a single one first and make sure it's made of safety glass so it fractures like a windscreen instead of shattering into shards.

No, it's not secure enough long-term. ( and I love my hot glue gun).

If glass shelves fell off, that could be very dangerous.

Maybe plastic shelves on the bricks?

I dunno

You can do anything… but why would you do this, of all things?!

On a window you could look into somehow using those 3M hooks. Some are quite strong.
Not sure I would put so many jars up though.

You could try nano tape but I think it will all end in tears. Can't you make end supports out of glass bricks and simply place the glass shelves on top of the glass bricks?

JasperJohnsPaintbrush · 05/12/2022 14:11

I work with stained glass to create mosaics, and the one glue I use to stick glass to glass is a clear silicone glue by a company called Dow Corning.
If you decide to buy some, give it a test on one shelf first, but I've found it to be a really good, strong glue.

Below are 2 places where it can be bought from. Have attached pic for reference.

I assumed glueing the shelves would be better than just placing them?

Thanks for that recommendation of glue

Araldite do a special 2-part glass adhesive. But like PP I’m struggling to understand why.

KatyMac · 05/12/2022 15:20

Why glue or why make the shelves?
