Should I change this mirror?

I've had this mirror for years, I really like the interlocking circles but I've always felt that the silver was a bit tacky. It's resin and I think I could paint it really easily, but would black be too harsh? We do have lots of silver photo frames and silver metal on the table lamp.

The sofa (not pictured) is cobalt blue and we have white shutters in the bay.

Or could white work? Or do I just leave it as is?

Should I change this mirror?

It would look dreadful in white. I would leave it or replace it with something else.

I like it as it is. You could restyle the mantle. A group of 3 pieces in varying heights on the left. Say a tall candlestick on the far left, and 2 other pieces, clustered. They need to have a common element, shape, texture or colour.

Or a skinny vase with foliage, then a little stack of books with a figurine sitting on top of the books.

Thing is, apart from the random candle, the things I have on my mantelpiece are things that I like and have meaning to me and my family, so I wouldn't be keen just to replace them with random stuff for aesthetic purposes. Plus I'd need to find somewhere else to display them.

Just rearrange them - tallest at the edges, nothing directly under the mirror (so, more tightly grouped)

I think it's great as is.

Black would be too harsh.

I disagree with the poster that advised to swap out your current mantelpiece objects with new, matching items. Imho, it's far preferable to display things that mean something to you personally (within reason, obviously 😉), than to buy stuff 'wholesale' just because it all matches!

As someone once said, if you choose things you love, somehow they will all work together.....

Your mirror is lovely as it is, imho - although not something id expect to like 🙂 - and I wouldn't change the colour.

I think the shape is far too modern for the fireplace. I'd go with one sitting on top of the mantle with a curved top with a v thin metal frame.

Go gold it will go with the blue

use a gilding wax , the below stuff is fab, you literally just rub it on with a cloth, takes no time and it is a solid pale gold lovely colour. You could also get a bit arty and just do round the edges or something, it’s also buildable.

I’ve done loads of stuff with it, including black picture frames

Sorry but I feel like it's such a beautiful classy room... except for the mirror. I'd be replacing it with something less chunky.

But each to their own.

Begoniasforever · 24/10/2022 12:38

I like the mirror, as said though I’d go gold as it will work better in the room.

blisstwins · 24/10/2022 12:42

I like it as is too. I think painting it white will give it a dated, matchy beach house vibe much less sophisticated than it is now

All the other metal is silver though.

Thanks, that is interesting

@SoupDragon I know what you mean about the other metal but it's just photo frames and a lamp base which could be changed. The door handle is brass.

For some reason I tend to think that silver photo frames are exempt from having to match other metal. Illogical I know! We used to have a silver edge round the TV but we recently got a new one and now it's just black, so less incentive to match with that.

As you can see from the reflection of the pendant light, the other accent colour is mustard. So I guess gold goes more with that?

I think I'll probably leave it for now though.

What sort of mirror is this? It’s just what I am looking for!

KirstenBlest · 07/06/2023 18:21

I'd move the items on the mantelpiece so that ABCD L-R is CDAB

KirstenBlest · 07/06/2023 18:21

I'd leave the mirror as it is

KirstenBlest · 07/06/2023 18:24

Oops! I meant CDBA

Agree with this, I’m in the minority and don’t like the mirror and think what @Madamecastafiore is far more in keeping, it’s a traditional shape but contemporary with the very fine frame, your fire surround is lovely and your current mirror fights with that, you need something far simpler.

thisthenthat · 07/06/2023 19:46

I love your room! The blue is perfect and I love the fireplace and shelves. I don't like the mirror at all, and I don't think a colour change will make a difference. The fireplace is a feature in itself, the mirror makes it look busy. Sorry OP. It's your opinion that matters most!
