Why is garden furniture so flimsy and yet so expensive?

Apologies for the rather boring topic. I did search previous threads beforehand.

I am in the market for a wooden outdoor dining table and set of six chairs. I want them sturdy and to last a long time for a rural setting [not a town terrace].

Honestly, everything I have looked at is over a thousand pounds plus but does not look particularly solid.

Is there any way around this? I am seriously thinking of making my own table out of a door.

Staffordshire furniture company. Made to order scandinavian softwood furniture. Incredibly sturdy. Costs less than £500.00. But it is that nasty ginger colour. I’ve bought some greying oil in Wickes.

Charles Taylor chairs are fab

Thank you Zebracat much appreciated. Why they stain wood that ginger colour I do not know!

I was thinking of buying a very basic wood set and then painting it in Ikea paint to match our other outdoor table and chairs ... not sure if that would work ...

I second Staffordshire furniture company.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 22/06/2022 19:41

Can I recommend this company - not cheap but there is a range of prices. My garden set is ridiculously solid- I can hardly lift it (in a good way) and customer service is good too

The colour is weather treatment. It will fade

Treated wood is more expensive and generally anything wood will be costly with prices rising

Timber is costly

Zebracat · 22/06/2022 19:56

It will fade, but there are choices, the6 could use another colour., I saw a similar U.K. company that used grey advertised in Gardeners World Magazine, but I can’t remember their name. SFC does recommend treating it again. I love the furniture Also it was delivered by a married couple in their 70s. She had long nails and watched. This tiny old man must have been made out of milled steel because he ran into the garden with all this heavy stuff on his back. It’s not flat packed. I so wish I’d asked to take his picture, it was incredible. I am very happy with it. Should probably leave a review.

I have a terrazzo stone table and benches that wasn’t expensive. It’s the weight of Stonehenge and will outlast me, my kids and probably grandkids…

Wafflesnsniffles · 22/06/2022 20:16

Hartnell garden furniture - eg the Hartnell Capri stuff - its metal not wooden but........... it requires no maintance, totally and utterly sturdy. Will last for decades. Previously Ive always preferred wooden garden furniture but it can be such a faff. Recently I sat on a friends Capri chair and thats what I now intend to buy. Totally converted!

Thanks the Corrida ones look good NaturalBlonde!

And thanks Saracenia

PansyPetunia yes timber is expensive and in a way that is good as we don’t want to cut down trees for nothing.

I will consider metal too , thanks for suggestion Wafflesniffles although I think stone is not suitable on this occasion Floydpepper but thanks for suggestion nonetheless! Going for a more country, rural look.
