Hard floors in living room

I'm disillusioned with carpet and am thinking of replacing our living room carpet with laminate/wooden flooring.

It's a large living-dining room with an arch in the middle. The dining end has a wall of bookcases. Sofas and cushions in the living room, curtains at either end.

Would rugs be enough to soften it? I don't want a cold, echoing space.

I have wooden floors everywhere (even upstairs). They neither cold nor do they echo. Proper wooden floors though, not laminate. Natural materials don't feel cold in my opinion, they add a visible warmth to the space.
