Eventually it's getting ripped out but funds are tight atm, but the dark oak effect is just not working with the room?
We're having the room painted next week to freshen things up and I was thinking of getting the fireplace painted, what you think?

I would leave it TBH, but would get the sill, skirting boards and architraves painted white. Is the door pine? (Pictures are too small to tell on the app) If so, I'd paint that white too, ditto the window frame if not wood effect uPVC. That would lighten the room enough IMO.

yourlegmyleg · 21/01/2022 21:24

What colour is the room being painted @OrisOnson?

OrisOnson · 21/01/2022 21:29

@SkankingMopoke Thank you, you really think leave it? The doors will be getting changed eventually too but the skirting boards will be painted white for sure!

@yourlegmyleg Not sure yet, deciding tomorrow, maybe thinking a olive green or very pale blue.

Yes, I wouldn't paint it but I like wood. At the moment the room has too many of different shades though. The floor and the fire surround would be fine, but with the skirts, door and window thrown in, it's too much.

Santahasjoinedww · 21/01/2022 21:42

Navy? Ime I buy a picture I Iove and select a colour from it to use as a starting point.
But a matt navy would go with the doors etc too.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 21/01/2022 21:45

I have that exact fireplace. I painted the mantelpiece white.

oneconcernedmama · 21/01/2022 21:46

I think it needs brightened up its really making the room look dark, I'd paint it white or an off white.

If the walls will be pale blue, I'm with @Santahasjoinedww. Really dark blue would look gorgeous.

Gwlondon · 21/01/2022 22:19

Matt black?

Mosaic123 · 22/01/2022 14:01

I think you should sell it if you don't want it so keep it as wood and sell when you do the room properly. The carving looks to be high quality.

CookieDoughKid · 22/01/2022 19:56

I think it's a real feature and wouldn't change it. I'd paint everything else in your room especially the window frames though.

caringcarer · 22/01/2022 20:17

OP, I. In process of buying a new house and separately I have bought what looks like the same fire place you have on eBay. I will definitely be keeping mine as is. In your home I would paint skirtings and door in white. I love original features and natural wood. I am now looking to source old wooden doors instead of white panelled new ones.

BrownStripePJ · 23/01/2022 23:09

Matte black

Matt black
Dark blue

Why are you going to 'rip it out'? I'd love an
Open fire & beautiful fireplace.

Allsorts1 · 23/01/2022 23:28

Why would you rip it out??? It’s lovely! It’s such a feature.

languagelover96 · 24/01/2022 11:17

White or off white for sure. Do not rip it out, it looks cool.

TooManyPJs · 28/01/2022 23:54

It's beautiful. Don't rip it out the room will be featureless. I'd pair it though. Probably white although I like the PPs navy suggestion, although that will depend on what else you are doing in the room.

Daisydoesnt · 29/01/2022 10:56

Don't paint it! Wait till you've painted the room including the sills/ skirting and then reevaluate.

Factsnotfudge · 29/01/2022 22:01

Sand it, then lightly oil it so it’s more like the floor?

Snowiscold · 29/01/2022 22:09

I’m not sure I’d paint it, but I do like the dark blue/black photo. It’s a nice fireplace. Don’t paint the skirting white. It’s a dated look. Paint it the same colour as the walls. It’s on trend and will make your walls look taller. As it is, your walls look too short for that fireplace.

BeQuietBrenda · 29/01/2022 22:15

We have this hideous 90s fireplace and surround. Can't afford to change it so I'm spray painting it antique cream just to brighten the room up. The chimney breast is being papered in a grey floral pattern.

(pic of original wallpaper, originally chosen by colour blind OH and his ex wife - I thoroughly enjoyed ripping it down earlier today 😂)

Meant to say, I'd kill for your fireplace OP! Leave it be.
