Stupid question but what did you do once you opened them up, did a builder check the chimney stack or is that the job of a chimney sweep? Were they already blocked off or did you need to do that and how (thinking drafts/insulation)? I have something similar and I don’t really know where to start or who I need to call!

I am so glad to have found this post. I bought a house that has had an old fireplace taken out of it. I have bought another one on eBay and collected it but it is painted so I will be restoring it. I just love projects like this. I am so looking forward to doing mine. It has what looks like black emotion paint over tiles but I am going to restore tiles too. Definately use wire brushes and a Dremmel.
