Please help me with a window issue

Hi everyone,

I’m not very active on this forum but it struck me that I have an issue that I think a lot of you will be able to help with. I’m new to homeownership and renovation work - I don’t have a clue except my instinct and my instinct is currently telling me that I have a dodgy window installer.

Basically, we have had some new windows installed at the back of the house. Double glazed sashes to replace some pretty grim and old ones. They are the plastic ones with the wood grain finish (regret on my part to not get timber frames but I had to compromise with DH somewhere…) We have bought our new windows through a local company who seemed to work with a lot of Victorian houses in the area, but the man we are working with is driving me slightly crazy. He does things without consulting us - for example installing new woodwork inside without any discussion on design. Is this normal and is it fair for me to raise this as an issue if I had something else in mind? He never brought it up as something he was planning to do!

The second issue I have is with caulking (only just learned what that is!) They have caulked all around the window frame between the wood and wall - is that normal?! None of my existing windows had that - it’s very bathroom-like and hideous.

I want to get some perspective before they come back to do the front of the house and we have a repeat of these problems because they won’t be asking for any direction, just doing what they want apparently!

Please can someone offer some perspective? Even thinking about this window man makes my blood boil because he seems to just assume he knows what customers want.

Thanks in advance!

He shouldn't be making design decisions for you/doing extra work without discussion. The caulking is fairly normal; I agree it looks bathroom-like, but it fills any tiny gaps and should be paintable (is that a word?).

Hey Knitted Fairies, thanks for your response. I was totally freaking out last night about the windows and am feeling a bit calmer now. I think I have worked out that I need to not rely on the window people for the trimmings work and actually arrange for a joiner to come and properly build the wood work around the windows! Learning every day…
