Plain or pattern carpet?

We are planning on putting carpet throughout our house. Plain carpet seems so uninteresting and so I was think of having a patterned one. Subtle pattern.

Do you or anyone you know have pattern carpet and does it look good? I know they were all the rage in the 70s but these were very bold patter.

I love the idea of patterned, I think if you're doing lots of rooms you need to think very hard about what you choose. I'd love it in my lounge but not so sure about everywhere.

Some of these are gorgeous. Go for it.

Some of those, especially the 'arts and crafts' types, look gorgeous in halls and on stairs. But those are smaller areas (widthwise) and generally without soft furnishings.

I think a big room would look ok if it is a subtle pattern and accessories were quite plain.
Floral patterns can be quite dominating and remind me of residential homes.
Having said that my PIL orange and brown front room Wilton carpet lasted them all their married life. It was regularly cleaned and no shoes allowed in there

@VenusClapTrap, thanks for this photo. Our colour scheme is green. Love the stair colour and also how the pattern works against it.

I’m feeling braver and will very likely in the end go for a pattern. I’m also strongly swayed by the advice of pattern downstairs and plain in rooms.

Very exciting.

Go for it, I think they're lovely and wooden floors are so boring and bloody dusty. Maybe plain carpet and patterned rugs or those House of Hackney and Timourous Beasties ones are fan-bloody-tastic

Sophie Ellis Bextor has just done her stairs in that House of Hackney carpet, it’s on her IG & looks fab, such a great change to all the grey that’s so dull.

You can probably get away with it on a stairs and landing and not much else there.

Plain carpet has been around longer than 30 years though. I vaguely remember a horrible one in a room as a child but otherwise all carpets were plain and I'm mid 50s.

This kind of thing looks fine on the stairs. But swirly floral could look a bit Queen Vic.

Plain or pattern carpet?

I was going to mention Sophie ellis bextor too! I need new stairs and landing carpet and it really got me thinking about pattern.
