Low cost way to recover sofas?

I've got some comfy but a bit knackered sofas I thought I might get covers for but it's super expensive. I've also been eyeing up new sofas but can't really justify it.
I've seen adverts for "magic" stretch covers but I'm cynical. Blankets/ throws might work if there's a good way to attach them / secure them. Anyone done this ? Thank you!

It's a local factory overs shop. Not sure of the original brand. They get odds and sods
I've not ruled it out yet but knocking my luck it'll be gone now! 😭

I've bought so many throws and blankets but still coveting my velvet sofa. I think of it as mine now...
