Think I’ve ruined our new black taps...

Cleaning the bathroom today and these white marks aren’t coming off the taps.
Stupidly went straight in with the bathroom cleaner to try and get rid but after a couple of attempts they’re still there. Quick google tells me I should have only used soap and water!! Any tips on cleaning matt black taps / getting rid of these marks?! Praying OH doesn’t notice, bathroom is only 2 months old....

Thanks all!

@ilovecardigans will give vinegar a go later. Bizarrely it's looking much better today. If vinegar doesn't do anything will ask for replacement taps.

I cleaned the taps because if I thought if I'm cleaning the sink why wouldn't I give them a wipe down - I just happened to have bathroom cleaner on the cloth. I hate cleaning, this has taught me that I probably shouldn't do it at all....Wink

Good luck, @FAQs and @bettyskitchen - hope it works!

p.s. I hate cleaning too 😜

@bettyskitchen Did the vinegar work? I'm too scared to use anything too strong on my taps.

mschneiderg · 06/11/2021 15:07

It's almost definitely limescale. We had the exact same thing with our black fittings which were only a few months old, and we've been careful not to use any abrasive chemicals. Ours looked exactly the same as yours and the only thing which properly does the trick for us is vinegar. Online all you see is 'just use soap and water!' but they obviously don't come from places with hard water...

A very late update but the vinegar works!

Very, very late reply, but huzzah @bettyskitchen ! That's great to hear. 😁

We had a new bathroom. Picked a floor as advised by the bathroom fitters. When the bloke came to may the floor he said u can't get this floor wet..... sort of defeats the object of a bathroom floor. Still, it's been down 18 months, been wet as I have kids, seems OK.....

It’s crazy how many things sold as home wares you can’t actually use - vases that you’re not supposed to put water in, plant pots with unglazed bottoms, kitchen worktops the manufacturer’s day not to get foodstuffs or water on....

I feel like I’m getting old moaning about it, but honestly why do we accept that some products are just not fit for purpose? Grrrr. Bloody marketing crap. Bloody shod manufacturers. Piss takers...

mynamechangemyrules · 02/07/2023 10:48

@bettyskitchen could I ask for a year on update..?!

I'm pressing buy on bathroom fittings today, had my heart set on all black fittings but the plumber and bathroom fitter both said not to do it in our hard water area. Asked my friend who works for a high end bathroom products firm and he said only do it if I'm happy to wipe all black sanitary ware after every use as it will show limescale easily...
Am gradually resigning myself to chrome but need a quick update to make up my mind, please 😂

bettyskitchen · 02/07/2023 16:43

@mynamechangemyrules we moved house 😅but lesson learned, I would never buy black fittings again. We’re also in a hard water area and they just got scummy so fast and I am useless at keeping on top of cleaning…
