Is rustic oak dated?

We are redoing our bedroom and I picked out Oak Furnitureland’s rustic oak range to replace all our broken ikea furniture. I showed a friend and she said that she liked it but that it was really “out of fashion”.

What do you think?

Thinking sage green for the walls. I thought this looked nice.

I have OFL furniture; like you I had random old cheap bits and pieces that were past their best and wanted something sturdy that would last and not look worn after a year of use.

I went for lighter wood but nothing fancy. I wouldn't say its "on trend" but it looks nice and I wont need to replace it in 5 years time when everyone with white gloss units and grey stuff is fed up with that look.

You can always change the handles if you feel it needs updating, I think going for something timeless and changing other aspects of a room to freshen it up is better than having to change your furniture constantly.

It is a bit dated, but it’s a chest of drawers for your bedroom, so won’t be seen a lot anyway. Agree with others - the handles are the worst bit.

@minipie ooh thank you

@SueEllenMishke we are also in a Victorian with period features and think it’s quite fitting

I think you can put what you like in your bedroom as, realistically, not very many people will see it Smile

I'd think a bit more carefully about the living room or similar, but the bedroom needs no input from anyone imo.

Are there really "fashions" in wooden bedroom furniture? 🤣

I don’t think it’s fashion as such, more about what’s considered desirable changes over the years , a good example would be the fitted wardrobe extravaganza that folks used to have, with the row of cupboards above their beds, now is considered very dated. Style is much more sleek now.

Op I think you just really like those and that’s great, it doesn’t matter who else does or doesn’t.

If you did wish something in keeping though why not buy a Victorian chest of drawers? Most antique places sell them and in fab condition, because the ofl ones aren’t Victorian. It won’t cost any more.

The ofl ones may be dated, but honestly, they are not that dated.😃

That's not outdated. I LOVE oak furniture land stuff, one day I'll deck my whole house out in it. It's timeless and gorgeous and looks great quality. Just very expensive!!

Straven123 · 20/09/2020 13:00

Second hand furniture shops around?
I don't dislike the chest of drawers but old ones are pretty cheap and you can paint or change the handles.

JoJoSM2 · 20/09/2020 13:01

I like that reclaimed kind of look.

Than buy the real deal instead of the faux reclaimed look?

Especially if you’re in a Victorian property with features, it’d look much better if you got a Victorian chest instead. The ones that are the plain wood with wooden drawer knobs so look rustic, especially if stripped.

Believe it or not, bluntness I have set foot in M&S in my lifetime, too. We looked very careful at the sonoma when we were buying bedroom furniture, last year.

If it was all solid oak, it would be less heavy because the particleboard the veneer is applied to weighs a ton.

I think buy it if you like it, knowing that if you buy stuff to last, nothing can be in fashion all the time (l have a house full of pine and am looking forward to its next turn of being fashionable). Easier to get the fashion statements from paint and textiles and accessories.

0blio · 20/09/2020 13:53

That M&S chest of drawers is lovely, but just like the 1940s utility furniture my parents had Smile it's obviously come back into fashion!

Yours looks lovely too OP, and quality is timeless.

Mosaic123 · 20/09/2020 14:01

Veneer is not necessarily a bad thing. Solid wood can split and some very expensive furniture is veneered.

Knittedfairies · 20/09/2020 14:09

We bought bedroom furniture from the Furniture Barn

Bluntness100 · 20/09/2020 14:55

For good ness sake, 😂😂😂 it clearly says solid oak and oak veneer, which means it’s solid oak with thin slices of oak attached. 😂😂😂

Bluntness100 · 20/09/2020 14:56

Also the op doesn’t like it so it’s irrelevant, 😂😂😂
