Masonry skirt/plinth around exterior of house what colour to paint?

DP and I have just finished painting the exterior roughcast of my detached house in Dulux Gardenia (ivory/light cream colour). A horrific and exhausting job lol but looks lovely. I will be painting the plinth around the base of the house. This is smooth render and will obviously get more dirty as it is nearer the ground and the path that surrounds the house. I was originally going to paint it black for practicality. It also looks good with cream. However, I'm now thinking of green or blue. Any ideas, or photos to share?

Traditional colour is black. If you use a different colour make sure it's not a football team's colours or those belonging to a famous brand! I remember my old school house painter saying that the bottom part of the house gets splashed with dirty water in the rain. Hence the dark colour.

Oh let me know what you decide. Our house is roughcast with a smooth part around the bottom, around windows etc and I've no idea what to paint any of it. I'd like the idea of a dark green around the base, and to paint the external doors in the same colour. But I can't find any pictures of similar roughcast painted houses, normally only roughcast in the top half and brick below.

Did you need scaffolding @PandoraRocks?

PandoraRocks · 23/05/2020 22:49

Yes I did need scaffolding on three sides. It would be too dangerous to paint off ladders as the front and pine end are quite high. I did have the guttering cleaned and years' worth of accumulated moss scraped off the roof as well. There are two coats of paint and the house had never been painted before.

We're going to be getting ours done by someone else, while the shell of the loft conversion is being put on as we want to maximise the use of the scaffolding. Hopefully you'll shares picture when you've decided what colour to paint the plinth!

I've just painted my bungalow with white masonry paint and was trying to answer this exact question. My son says back plinth and I think grey.

I found this Dulux site that lets you select your colours (walls, doors, plinth) and see a picture of what it would look like.

Mine is white, next door is black. Obviously I think mine looks better 😂

Ours are brick 1930s semis though so not the same as yours. I don't think I'd paint it a different colour to the main part of the walls though.

I think a really nice deep blue-great would look lovely with the cream? Like a deep grey but with a slight hint of blue in there too—quite neutral but with a tiny bit of pigment.

I finally painted it Valspar Peacock Blues, a deep teal like colour. Looks lovely against the cream.
