Choosing the rug which won't be or go out of fashion immediately

I'm not particularly bothered about being in fashion decorating wise, but I don't want to buy something which in a year or two people will look at and think "oh, that's so 2018..."!

I have narrowed down a choice of two rugs I think will suit our room, one is indigo and white patterned, which I like, but I wonder if blue has been so in fashion that it will quickly look out of fashion. The other is plain beige. I've read that beige colours are going to come back imminently, but I'm looking at it wondering if it looks outdated at the moment!

The rug needs to be fairly large, so I don't want to waste several hundred pounds on something I'll end up hating in two years time.

I'm really bad at making decisions, so I'd love to hear opinions on a choice between the two!

I've deliberately not mentioned the existing decoration, because I'm more interested in whether you think either will look out of fashion quickly.

I like the blue one, don't really like the beige and would almost certainly spill something on it the say I put it down I'm no fashion expert though, just go for what I like so probably not the person you wanted a reply from!

From the pictures you’ve posted I’d definitely go with the blue one. Beige is often insipid and uninteresting.

But it is very difficult to say without knowing what scheme it’s fitting into.

I personally don’t think the blue one is going to date hugely in a couple of years. But then I don’t think you should pick things to look current, I think it’s much better to go for the one you like best and just enjoy it for its own sake.

Definitely the blue one. I agree with pp that the beige one is very bland.

Blue - by a mile. I don’t think it will date.
Beige is very bland and boring. And will probably look grubby in a few months.

The blue one is a Louis De Poortere rug ("Agadir") you can get from several sites but here for example:

and they do it in several other colours.

The beige one was my initial choice, as I fell for the look of an apartment on a tv series (I think it was in Scandal but the pictures online seem to show an updated version of the apartment). As we have got some pattern in the room already I thought that even though the rug itself is bland it wouldn't clash with anything! But, we're likely to recover a chair before long, so I think the blue one would also work. It is a cotton/wool mix and I do wonder if it would look worn quite quickly. My husband bought our existing rug about 30 years ago, so I think I'm expecting rather a lot - the existing one isn't worn out, but I'm just fed up with it and will move it into a bedroom.

I do tend to dither for a long time before spending that much money though, so having some reassurance that you like the blue one is gratefully received .

Much prefer the blue one. Has some actual character and interest to it. I say go for it!

The beige one will show any marks. Go with the blue if you like blue as a colour generally. I have a rug I bought six years ago which is trendy now but I still like it. Not Moroccan btw.

I love that blue one. I like beige in general but think that one is too dull.

I think with rugs you need to worry more about how will it clean, how will it wear, how will it look with the furniture you've already got rather than 'will it look soooo last year'? Unless you've got sufficient income to change the rug every couple of years, (and I've got rugs I've had down for ten years), then the wearability is surely more important than how quickly it will date?

Or is it just me, being poor?
