Velvet Sofas?

Help! I'm about to order a large sofa and large armchair but am so torn on the fabric choice.
I want fairly hard wearing but with a luxury feel. We currently have an uncomfortable leather sofa and fancy a change in fabric choice.
Am I mad to choose velvet? I love the look and feel in the store, but will it feel too 'furry' in the summer months? There is an option of a velour but not sure on the more 'distressed' look.
I'm 90% sure on the velvet but having a wobble. Any wise words?

We bought a dark green velvet sofa la year ago and it's still in great condition.

Notthebloodygym · 03/01/2020 09:52

I've just bought one, in December. Apparently you should brush the pile with your hand on the 'wear' areas once a day. In reality this mainly means sweep your hand over the pile from front to back of the seat cushions before going to bed/first thing in the morning.

I’ve had one just over a year and it still looks brand new.
Though it does take a bit of hoovering as we have a white cat and the fur sticks to the velvet something terrible.
Wouldn’t swap it though.

I bought a green velvet chesterfield style sofa a few months back and love it 💚

Thanks for the replies- it seems to be a well-wearing fabric to go for.
I don't think I'd be hesitating if it was for a statement chesterfield style. (Love the pop of colour in the pic)

It's for the sofas in our main room and will be in a silver grey (dh doesn't love the chesterfield style)
I just don't want to hate the texture in the warmer summer months.
Aargh - wish I could be more decisive on this

This is mine, though mine is the larger four seat version.

I love it, and it’s not too warm in summer at all.

You're making me want to be more bold.

I was going for a silver grey to accent with pops of colour so that I'm not limited to one look/style for the next few years.
But I am now lusting after a beautiful blue one.
We've been faffing about with this for too long, I think I've got myself caught up in the idea that it has to be 'right' and I'm afraid to finally make a decision. Pfffft

We have velvet sofas and they’ve worn really well

However, habitat do a “mystic velvet” which is super treated against stains and has a more shallow pile and it’s excellent, I’d really recommend.

On the colour - I think silver / grey velvet sofas will look rather unfashionable in the next year or so so perhaps good to rethink some of the classic, jewel toned colours?

PurpleBee39 · 03/01/2020 17:44

Hi all, could I ask which furniture stores you bought from? We are going out looking tomorrow and don’t know who is reliable and trustworthy!

DavetheCat2001 · 03/01/2020 17:47

Made.com do some nice velvet sofa's..not sure if they have showrooms though so you can actually try them out first

DavetheCat2001 · 03/01/2020 17:48

This was one that I definitely contemplated:

Made has a showroom in Tottenham Court Road but honestly, the quality and comfort of the sofas isn’t great

Habitat is surprisingly good as is Loaf

Thesuzle · 03/01/2020 18:03

Darlings of Chelsea, made ours , love it

DavetheCat2001 · 03/01/2020 18:06

I've heard Loaf isn't that great I'm comparison to the price.

They look nice though!

wonkylegs · 03/01/2020 19:36

Made also has a showroom near Leeds

wonkylegs · 03/01/2020 19:36

I have a red velvet chair from them and it's great but I would want to sit on a sofa before I bought it

50shadesofsay · 03/01/2020 20:34

Olderthanilookapparently
How have you found your Made.com sofa? Is it good quality? I ask as I've seen they have a sale on and am tempted as price looks good.

ProfessorPollington · 03/01/2020 20:46

Barker and Stonehouse have some gorgeous ones too. We just got a deep blue velvet one and I absolutely love it.

FenellaVelour · 03/01/2020 21:04

Mine is from James and Rose, quality is fantastic, great customer service and a good price.

FenellaVelour · 03/01/2020 21:08

James and Rose use a really good quality foam so it’s soft and comfy but doesn’t squish flat. I was really unsure about buying a sofa I’ve not sat on, but it’s brilliant. I will buy all future sofas from them too.

Sparkesy · 03/01/2020 22:21

Thanks Fenella, that's a great recommendation- their things look such great quality- we're planning on a trip there based on your info.
Thanks so much

I’ve got the Joules chesterfield in mustard yellow, and the velvet has held up really well against my toddlers. It’s been lovely to sit on all year round.
