What sort of paint to use in a wooden front door?

I've tried googling this and seem to get a lot of conflicting answers!

I mean once it's been stripped back and repaired, I'm just not sure what sort of paint to finish it with.

Any suggestions?

Thanks Smile

After sanding we applied a primer (oil-based). Then simply applied exterior wood paint. It's personal choice regarding gloss, satin or eggshell - it depends on the overall look you're aiming for. Definitely pick one for exteriors only as it helps protect against the rain, etc. The link should give you some ideas.

Not 100% sure but my dad has a wooden front door and he had special paint that would stop the door swelling during bad and good weather, as in the winter when its wetter the door would often swell and get stuck and take some real yanking to open. Since laintingnits been fine.

Im not sure what paint it was though in afraid

Do you want a wood door though? Parents had a solid mahogany one that weighed a ton and stuck every single year.

They’ve got composite now.

@soundsystem did you decided what paint to use and would you mind sharing the results? I would love a new door but can't afford it at the moment, you have inspired me to paint ours.

I did see a how to on Pinterest who used behr paint and primer which was one coat, but I think it's only available in the states.

The Americans have diy sewn up, zissner primers have always worked well for me.

If you use oil based you’ve got to have it on early so it’s got time to dry before you lock up at night.

Thanks, all!

Fluffy will check that out, thanks. Do want to stick with the wooden door as it's the original one from when the house was built in the 20s and it's lovely - it's just in need of some TLC!

@SecretLimadeDrinker We haven't quite got round to it yet. Planning to head to B&Q/Homebase tomorrow to choose a colour, but might be a couple of weeks until it actually gets done!

@soundsystem did you paint your front door? I'm thinking of doing it in September when DS1 is back at school!
