Neutral paint colour for all over?

We’ve moved into a new house and need to decorate the whole house.

I’d potentially like one colour for all over the house. In our last house we did this and had a grey pain from Dulux “Pebble Shore”. It was actually a really lovely grey colour and many people commented on it and copied us!

Anyway we don’t want grey again this time as it seems like everyone has it and also we want something slightly different to the last house

DH doesn’t want white but we’d consider an off white.

I’d like something not too warm and not too cool, not a full in grey but not a cream either.

Maybe these sorts of colours

www.dulux.co.uk/en/colour-details/h_white/l_Living%20room/s_Walls?tab=2#white

From a quick look I like Vintage Chandelier, Milky Pail and Summer Linen

If you have any specific colour recommendations of colours that work for you then please let me know

I almost feel we got lucky with Pebble Shore as it was the perfect grey. Now I want the perfect beige / brown / greige

(DH has expressed and interest in “brown”)

Farrow and Ball Cornforth White - just done my living room and halls in this and its perfect! A light but slightly warm "griege".

AliceRR · 16/05/2019 23:23

So many suggestions - I’m sure at least one of them would be perfect - would it be excessive to order samples of all of them? 😬

Valspar Ziggy

BallyHockeySticks · 17/05/2019 11:04

My vote is Nutmeg White. It's a similar saturation as Egyptian cotton (ie v pale) but slightly warmer/less grey. It's not a really a "white with the hint of", it is obviously not white IYSWIM.

Dulux timeless is my go to.

I’ve used just walnut in my hall and stairs this week and really like it. I have Egyptian cotton in my bedroom which is a very warm neutral.

Alsohuman · 25/05/2019 11:59

Timeless is lovely.

AliceRR · 25/05/2019 14:53

Thanks everyone

I ordered a few samples from Farrow Ball. There are so many brands and colours so thought I just need to make a start. Hopefully I like one of them!

Egyptian cotton feels soulless in my friend's house. F&b skimming stone is what you want (colour matched in b&q if you want to cut the cost, the Johnstone's equivalent is nothing like the authentic shade)

mineallmine · 30/05/2019 20:01

It's probably too late for you but I'm just home from a friend's house which is painted in Little Greene Pearl mid 168 mixed in Fleetwood paint. I'm going to copy her in my house- it's lovely. Neutral but not boring.

AliceRR · 30/05/2019 22:19

It’s not too late as we haven’t chosen yet

My samples from F&B arrived yesterday. From the tins they all look lighter than they looked on the website so I’m not sure what to expect now. I haven’t tried them yet as we’ve had guests but might try them tomorrow if I have time.

We’ve got Elephants Breath, Skimming Stone, Shaded White, School House White, Joa’s White and Oxford Stone

I hope I like one of them as I have spent about £27 on samples!

I actually read about Little Greene for the first time today (possibly in a MN post) and it seems to have good reviews

Little Greene is lovely paint and similar in price to Farrow and Ball. I had a LG paint mixed in a Fleetwood washable paint for my kitchen (on the recommendation of the same friend) and I was very pleased with the quality.
I have Elephant's Breath in my bedroom and its lovely.

AliceRR · 30/05/2019 23:28

Thank you. I’ll report back when I’ve tried the samples 🙂

I have Just walnut dulux nearly everywhere and really like it.

AliceRR · 31/05/2019 08:34

Just walnut dulux

Haven’t seen that one, sounds nice. I’ll have a look

We went to my parents’ house at the weekend and DH liked the colour on one of my bedroom walls (accent wall) which was Dulux Cookie Dough

He said he wants a “chocolate brown” or a “coffee” colour 🙄

Also haven’t looked how much more expensive F&B is as against Dulux

I read on another thread yesterday people pick a colour from F&B, for example, and then go to B&Q and get the colour mixed in a cheaper paint 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve just painted a room in Dulux Rock Salt and had compliments on it.

megletthesecond · 31/05/2019 22:43

Mine is all Valspar Tidy White.
Although I don't rate valspar at all. It's not scrubbable and pen marks don't come off it.
Light smudges usually clean off. But deliberate marks don't budge, even with magic eraser.

spellingtest · 31/05/2019 22:45

I've blatantly not even read replies but being an ID fir the last 35 years I would say skimming stone (Farrow and Ball) without question.

AliceRR · 31/05/2019 22:53

Thank you

I’ve got a sample of Skimming Stone. I have high hopes for that and Elephant’s Breath but really think I don’t now know what I want until I get the samples in the wall

Beware of slapping samples lots on the wall depending on the original colour they may look odd with the original colour as a comparison. Just go for slimming stone. You don't be disappointed. Elephants Breath may be a tad too dark.

spellingtest · 31/05/2019 22:58

Slimming stone! I think that's a better name Smile

spellingtest · 31/05/2019 23:00

Please go to velspar and have the colour mixed. The quality of paint is superior.

Constance1234 · 31/05/2019 23:01

We've got Dulux Timeless throughout the house at the moment and it looks good in all lights/time of day.

LoafofSellotape · 31/05/2019 23:02

I thought I wanted Egyptian Cotton but it's quite a cool colour, I ended up with Natural Hessian which is just a bit warmer. I love it.

thisisthetime · 31/05/2019 23:18

Another vote for Egyptian cotton, we’ve had it in living room and bedroom and really like it

AliceRR · 31/05/2019 23:35

I like Summer Linen @BreakfaststSquiffanys but I’ve only seen it in the Dulux website

Perhaps. I’m not sure the best way to do it. In our last house I bought three greys and out up four rather large square swatches on the walls and it was clear which one we liked.

Now I’ve got six colours and it did occur to me I should maybe do two in each room or something so I’m not overfaced.

It does sound like Elephant’s Breath or Skimming Stone are popular. I’m interested to see what they’re like as they look quite grey in the tins.

Please go to velspar and have the colour mixed. The quality of paint is superior.

How does that work? Would we just go and then they’d mix something based on what sort of colour we want.

Timeless looks very nice but more yellows cream than I think we wanted. I can barely tell the difference between Egyptian Cotton and Natural Hessian but I think they’re the right colour family. Nutmeg White looks good too

It may end up that we have a slightly warmer colour downstairs and then a cooler / grey tone upstairs 🤔

I’m quite excited to try my samples tomorrow. Is that a bit sad?! 🙄🙈
